Sama sama :)
Ok, first a basic Bandwidth school:
Connection speed is measured in BITS per second, but since a bit is a very small amount we usually calculate in thousands (Kilo bits, or "kb") and millions (Mega bits, or "Mb") per second. So bits per second is known as the "Bandwidth". The highest speed reachable in theory with a 1 Mbit connection is, not surprisingly, 1 Mbit per second and so on. In real life the speeds are usually much lower, depending on the quality of the connection (especially wireless), the service from the ISP and last but not least, the speed of the source.
Data amount (traffic) is measured in BYTES. Again, we usually calculate in millions (Mega bytes, or "MB") or billions (Giga bytes, or "GB"). This is not the same as BITS. One BYTE roughly equals 10 BITS in the context of internet and computer networks. Why do we have to bother with two different "standards" - BITS and BYTES? Because old habits die hard! Rule of thumb: 1 BYTE = 10 BITS.
So if we want to measure the maximum traffic produced by a 1 Mbit connection, it would be 1 Mbit/10 bits (remember 1 byte is 10 bits) bytes per seconds, which equals 0.1 Mbyte per second. So, again in the most optimal cases, generating 1 Gigabyte (1000 Mbytes) of traffic on the same connection would take roughly 1000/0.1 seconds, which equals 10'000 seconds, or roughly 3 hours. Again, in real life (especially in Indonesia) the speed is usually much slower. By the way, if you're following the math you'd know now that 1 Gigabyte equals 10'000'000'000 bits.
A final example. Watching YouTube (standard quality) uses a bandwidth of roughly 300 kbit per second, or 0,3 Mbit/s. This generates 0,03 Mbytes per second of traffic. How much does 1 hour of constant watching generate? Easy math! 1 hour equals 3600 seconds, so multiply 0,03 Mbytes by 3600 seconds, et voila, you get roughly 100 Mbytes, or 0,1 Gbytes. So roughly 10 hours of YouTube consumes your monthly 1 Gb plan.
What about Skype (ok this is really the last example) ? Skype without video is very bandwidth efficient, which means it requires very little bandwidth, and hence producing very little traffic. In fact a Skype conversation requires as little as 10 kbits per second, or 0,01 Mbit/s, which again equals about 0,001 Mbyte per second. So one hour of Skype would consume about 3,6 Mbytes of traffic. Not much considered 1 Gbyte equals 1000 Mbytes, or roughly 275 hours of Skype.
begonia wroteUsually I cannot watch (download properly) some videos because cuts all the time, could you tell me please if this problem is from my computer, from the lack of some program in my computer or from the speedy conection?
Most probably your (Indonesian) internet connection is too slow. You need minimum 320 kbit (0,3 Mbit) connection in AVERAGE to watch YouTube. This means that you probably need 1 Mbit connection or faster for a good experience. Tip: You can pause the video and wait for it to pre-load. You will see the red line progress as it loads, and then press play when it's far ahead of the play position.
begonia wroteI will check the websites you mention!! but by the way, any of you have any experience about download this kind the programs to know how much traffic internet you are using and let you know when are you close to what you have contract?
Any experience and advice will be very grateful because I don´t want to spend more than 200.000 rp per a month!!!
Thanks again!
Yes, I'm also looking for feedback on this kind of tools for cheaper surfing.
Kind regards
