Go to the gold bazaar, Jl Hasanudin, in Denpasar.
Hi HappyMacThe "gold bazaar" mentioned above is a string of shops selling, (and buying back), gold jewellery in Denpasar. You have to be very careful what you buy, even in the bigger places. For example. I once bought a gold necklace for my wife in what seemed to me to be a reputable place. Got the receipt and all that. Just out of interest, my wife took it back to the same place six months later for an "appraisal", (estimate of its worth). They told her it was next to worthless and they'd sold it in the first place! I lost, needless to say. My wife wasn't impressed either.I don't know whom you can trust around there. Keep this in mind.Good luck in any case. 8)

Did the people at the store think she wanted to sell it to them and that's why she was getting it appraised? We both know she just wanted to know it's value, but maybe the people at the store just wanted to lowball her so they could buy low and sell high.Although I have no problem whatsoever believing the first example either, just a thought though.

Unbelievable... even you showed the receipt of the same shop...?
Believe it, it happens. In case some of you are not aware of this, it's quite common for locals to buy some gold jewellery as a form of "insurance". The "deal" is they can return it, with their original receipt and the shop buys it back from them, minus 5-10% of the initial price (usually 10%). Sometimes, the shop will say the style of the jewellery is no longer popular and try to buy it back for an even bigger hit than the 10%. Did the people at the store think she wanted to sell it to them and that's why she was getting it appraised?
No. The practice of selling back to the shop is a normal transaction. We both know she just wanted to know it's value, but maybe the people at the store just wanted to lowball her so they could buy low and sell high.
That's also not true, (apart from the "lowballing" part). It was an attempt to judge how honest the particular shop is. In this case, not at all.The gold necklace was totally plain, (no fancy design). But it was supposed to be of much higher gold content and quality than it actually was, (according to them).

The best places to buy old or already fashioned gold is from any of the network of government gold shops called Pegadaian. They operate as loan businesses against gold as collateral. If the owner doesn't come back and pay the loan, they can sell the items. These are guaranteed and come with assay certificates stating gram weight and karat or kadar %.

I agree with this last comment. The best place to buy gold in Bali is any Pegadaian. They are registered with the government and you can always get your gold back anytime you have the money you used to buy it. It's like a form of gold investment scheme.
