If you want to get all philosophical just try driving here  Symbol - try the motorbike as a symbol of individual freedom without any restraints such as licenses, road worthiness tests, health tests, age tests, etc.

Jimbo
You already have a symbol with the eagle/griffin and what it stands for. You also have the Pancasila symbol which for me sums up everything that is great about Indonesia.

another symbol, with very different associations/meanings is ofcourse the swastika. It scrared the crap out of my grandma when she saw some pictures I had sent her.
calitobali
Haha, I remember the first time I saw the swastika in Bali. Most Americans, myself included until coming to Bali, have no idea that the Swastika has been around long before Hitler made it infamous, and has no negative intentions about it.

yeah same her cali, I didn't knew it either and always connected the swas with adolf...actually the first time I saw a different associations was thanks to that movie the da vinci code, also in that movie saw the origin of the KKK hoodies, hahaha.
Jimbo
Hitlers swastika is a reverse of the hindu symbol of good luck
gilbert de jong
well jimbo, it looks exactly the same to me?

Hi Gilbert, I agree with Jimbo. It seems there are a number of different ways for this symbol to be drawn. I found this sample in a recent search for images of "Hindu Symbol of Good Luck", check out the one listed for Bali as compared to others, it travels in the opposite direction to the Hitler's swastika.http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_SqhhJb_P3Kk/SlH8NL0KiEI/AAAAAAAAIEU/CC4uSCWCqZU/s400/Swastikas.png[/img]

The idea that Hitler's was a"rotated version" of some sacrosanct icon from ancient times is too simplistic, and possibly an enduring myth.SteffandShaz posted a few sample images. (That's great, and saves me doing it. And hello to you both, BTW) Those 16 images can be put into two categories: "Nazi" clockwise-turning and the opposite, anti-clockwise-turning.They stack up like this:"Nazi" version: ChristianTibetJapan"Hindu"CeltJainJewishNon "Nazi" version:HopiMaltaCeylon"Islamic"LaplandBaliAztecGreekAustralia (no swastika found there, so far, apart from Neo-Nazi graffiti) (I can't tell with "China" - seems to be both versions at the same time.)Note that "Hindu" and "Bali" seem to be at odds. Huh?What's really happening is obviously far more involved than which way an icon appears to turn, how it's represented over time, by whom, which culture, etc. :D 8)
