Books about WordPress

Since it's computer related, I thought I post this here. I have a website which is pretty horrible. So I want to change things, and decided I'll use WordPress (the hosted version). Would anyone on this forum either know where I can get WordPress for Dummies or any other book about WordPress here in Bali? I checked out Gramedia online but they don't list it. Or maybe you even have a copy which you don't need any more? I would be more than happy to pay for it, just make me an offer I can't refuse :)

I have been reprimanded for mentioning thepiratebay.org on this forum before, but if you go there and search "wordpress" - you will find a few e-books that should be useful.

I'd suggest just finding your information for free online...wordpress is a free program and there is a plethora of information available about it online for free. Just go to their website and browse their support forums for example.

I have been using WP since about 2005. Definitely no expert, but I know my way around it reasonably well. I have never used the hosted version. I would suggest hosting it on your own domain if you are serious about the project, or if you want to make some money with it. If it is just something for fun, then the hosted version works well. Blogger is also pretty decent. I wouldn't bother buying a book, as the software is updated so often and there are so many great resources on the web. I would say if you know how to log onto this forum and write posts, you have enough computer skills to handle WP. I would be more than happy to help if you have any problems/questions.

thank you all for your suggestions - I am having a look at the online resources at the moment. It's just that I am one of these people who can learn better from something that's printed, so I can scribble some notes etc. :wink:

There are many books about WordPress in Gramedia (in Indonesian). There are two flavours of WordPress. 1) WordPress.com (free and easy for beginners, up to a point) 2) WordPress.org (totally free but you have to have your own web-hosting service to put it on) The total freedom that the second option offers comes at a price. A learning curve. You have to do most things by yourself, including wrapping your brain around all kinds of esoteric stuff most people don't want to know about. (Plenty of help on the web.) My wife is pretty good with it. She read some Indonesian books about it, which helped, but when she got down to the nitty-gritty, the books were next to useless (apart from getting up and running in the first place.) Her "advice" to you is get your hands dirty and learn as you go. Get a good webhost, (either free or paid for), and experiment. (We used BlueHost for a couple of years and recently canceled. Nothing wrong, exactly, but found some free webhosting that works nearly as good.) If you already have a website hosted somewhere, you're well on the way to dealing with the intricacies of WordPress. (The version that doesn't hold your hand all the way). As I said - it's a learning curve. Two suggestions: 1) Play with the pre-configured version. It might do everything you actually want. 2) Have a look at http://www.wix.com/. You can get a very impressive, sophisticated, free website up and running in less than an hour (some people say 15 minutes). Definitely worth a look! Most things are drag-n-drop, thousands of free templates...you don't need to know anything about "coding". Hope this helps... 8)

Ah JC you are wonderful - maybe it's the initials :P Funny that, but I am with BlueHost as well. Yeah, I'll wriggle my way through, love a bit of a challenge - I guess that's why I live here!! The only thing I am not keen on, is learning code, so I'll try to get by, if that doesn't work, I just have to bite the bullet and learn it. And I'll have a look at that website you mentioned. The [b]wix[/b] sites are flash-based, which doesn't suit everybody. However, there is talk that new features will be introduced, like the ability to edit parts of the existing code. (Maybe they've done it already.) Regarding [i]BlueHost[/i]. We found it to be very good, overall. Even when my credit card was charged for another two year subscription, (our fault), I got to talk with a [i]BlueHost[/i] robot about it. The robot took the details and promised to return most of the money involved. I was skeptical, at first, but to their credit, they did it (took a couple of days). I was [b]very[/b] impressed by that. I just sent you a [b]PM[/b], in case you'd like to talk to my wife, (a budding [i]WordPress[/i] afficionado). She knows more about it than I do (unless she strikes a [b]big[/b] problem). Between us, we manage to fix them... :D

I had a look at the wix site, and it might be just a little too "flashy" for what I have in mind. People seem to get carried away a little when they first start playing with flash, but some of the websites are quite attractive. Thank you, I have replied to your pm.
