Hi,
I have 4400 KW capacity and I need to increase it. I found someone who says they can do it but they're asking 7jt and more than 2 months to complete the job.
Has anyone done this before or knows of a faster/cheaper way?
Thanks!

The "someone" you have is presumably going to liaise with PLN on your behalf, pay what they want, and keep some for him/her self.
PLN cannot generate enough to meet the demand in Java and Bali so are liomiting the number of new connections - and presumably upgrades.
Here is a new article from last year that my give you the flavour
http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2009/06/10/pln-says-new-connection-fee-optional039-government-objects.html
My suggestion would be to proceed slowly, live with 4.4 for now, explore options, you will eventually get a cheaper deal maybe.

Does your friend work at PLN? You could try contacting the PLN directly. I doubt you will have much luck with that route, but it is worth a try.
If you use the services of your friend, don't pay anything upfront. As Ron says, I think it will be difficult right now to get any kind of upgrade.

There are alot of guys who call themself 'agents' of the PLN...there is no such thing, those people are not employed by the PLN, and can cause alot of trouble (true, the PLN does use locals for PR reasons and some of those guys can help, but most can't) if anything should go wrong, PLN is not liable since the petugas is not employed by the PLN...illegal hookups/posts/wires etctec...if there's going to happen anything at all.
Just go to the mainoffice of the PLN and tell them your wishes, bring your meternumber, copy of KTP on who's name the meter is running, at the PLN they will fill out sort of an application form, and tell you when the surveyor(if needed)will come by your place, but most likely they will offer to install a second meter (if available) toget you up to the desired output.

I'm going thru something similar. PLN in Gianyar has no equipment to provide our upgrade and we will/must use an agent for material & labor. Agent - as in on their list of registered contractors who may do such work. I've been to the main office and met with the dept head and reviewed the list - it's real. I happen to know a contractor. I'm presently waiting for PLN to approve and suggest a price - sure some money will go in pockets. Timing is flexible, read $$$. Main thing is your local transformer has to have available power capacity for the upgrade.

Ditto for me, the current project is due for electricity soon, 7700w. We have had 2 different prices from contractors. My wife went to the PLN in Denpasar last week and was also told that there was a shortage of equipment. Our last project took 4 months before we got the electricity on...luckily just as we sold it , the power was connected. I guy I know bought a $1million+ villa in the new Akasha project in Batu Belig, they were sold without power, all supplied by a massive generator until the power was connected, each villa was running 25,000w .!!!

Thanks guys!
Another question or doubt: the "agent" I talked to said that after the change was made we would have a pre-paid meter and that would end up being cheaper electricity per KW.
Is that true and is that the right thing to have?
Cheers

I have a prepaid meter. I dont know if we are using more power or not in the new house but we are paying more. I spend about Rp300,000 a month on electricity now. But our capacity is only 2kish ( 2200?) The prepay is also a pain as in the south anyway you can only buy the credit fromt he PLN office on Sunset road and an office in Denpasar. The Denpasar office open for a few hours on Saturdays and I think 1 hour on Sundays. So you better make sure you dont run out at a time when the office is closed.

I agree - avoid the pre-paid. One house near us had pre-paid, and had visitors staying in it, they ran out on Friday - and were in the dark all weekend.

Like in the old time in UK with the coin meter, with shillings. Never run out of coin, never the less was a pain in the a**e (sometimes)

This is worse than a coin meter. With a coin meter if you run out you can go get coins from a neighbor or shop. With this prepaid meter you buy pulsa in advance. I tried to buy a spare voucher to put buy for emergencies but they are only valid for a few months. If your meter runs out with this you have to hope the office is open to buy more because you have NO OTHER OPTIONS. If I could avoid putting a prepaid meter in a house I was building I would.
I have to say I think we pay more too on this than we did on the last house too.

U R 100% right, in this estate there are some prepaid meters and everyone stated that electricity cost more than usual meter.
We was going to have one too but PLN run out of prepaid and we got the "normal" one, LUCKY WE. :P :P

Prepaid may not be optional, in my area it's a must for new meters.

Power here is a nightmare!
I asked about getting power to the house about 2 months ago. Went to PLN's offices here in Amlapura and was told it would cost somewhere around 26 million because there has never been power there before and they will need to erect poles and run lines and, and, and. No completion date even mentioned.
Well, after pulling my socks back on I went away and considered the options - there are none! Pay or sit in the dark.
So went to a friend and asked his advice - he got a "friend" in who works "with" PLN and she viewed the whole situation and came back with a price of 40 million! I thought she was kidding, really! She wasn't! 3 poles and all the cable come to that price, apparently.
Oh, and this would be the prepaid 6600 watts although I only asked for 3600 - go figure?
Any advice (other than buy candles) gratefully accepted. I am sort of willing to bite the bullet to let my neighbours have power for the first time and morally I see the right and wrong of it too, but if we could just go back to the original 26 million I would almost be happy  now!
Have heard that new builds on the Bukit are getting power for 100 million :!:

I dont know really know how the system works with this. But Lombok has a much more severe problem with power. There is not enough for the whole island so there are permanent rotating powercuts like we have experienced in Bali the last few months. However we still got our power put on for a pretty nominal fee.

why not try contained energy? Solar panels for example or a combination with a lower watt/ampere PLN thing & a generator?
Cost more money sure in the beginning, but if you guys mention prices around 30 - 40 million just to get connected....Jesus!!! What a ripoff!!
Jimbo
Why not get your own generator?

Yeah... I am in same boat... being asked for 240Jt for 18kw and poles only have to run 200m from the transformer.
Anyon have good contact at PLN office in Soka/Tabanan area... NOT an agent... we quickly discovered that means simply a local entrepeneur who goes to PLN and adds a fee to the PLN fee!!!

what for can one house/villa possibly need 10 or more KW???
I have my 900W which is pretty much enough for everything I need (If I need more I can still run a gen-set). Just use a solar hot water system (or even a solar panel if you want to spend some more?), LED lamps instead of normal bulbs, etc.
I understand that a villa needs more than that, but 10 or even 25 KW? Come on... what do you guys run in your backyards?
Jimbo
You cannot use an electric kettle with 900w or a iron oor a toaster. If you can you can only use one at a time. I have 2300 which will just about cope with one AC and lights. Other items such as fridge/freezer water pump etc also need electicity.
900w is what is used by the poorer families who cannot afford any more.
