Fishing in Bali

Does anyone know of a fish farm in Bali where you can go and catch fish? My grandson is only 4, and wants to go fishing. Bit young yet to take out in boat.

Hi fisherman, Not sure exactly where you are staying exactly, but I can suggest a couple of places I sometime throw a line in around Kuta. Not really fish farms but more of a 'wild' fishing experience if you want a bit of a challenge. On the right hand side of Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai a little bit north of the Dewi Ruci statue/roundabout there is a big reservoir type thing that is very comfortable for fishing with a youngster. In the reservoir itself you'll catch Tilapia (cichlids) of varying sizes and if you're unlucky one of the horrible spiky Plecostomus that are good for nothing and usually thrown on the bank by the locals. The place is usually well patronised by the locals and is a great place for having a conversation with locals that are mad about their fishing (like me!). Further downstream there is a bridge and barrier dam that prevents the water from flowing into Benoa harbour with a heap of mangroves there too. If you fish on the ocean side you can catch all manner of unusual marine fish, though rarely of any size. I've caught small scats, javelin fish, trevally, glassfish and cardinal fish there. This area is convenient because there's a tackle shop on the western side of Ngurah Rai just opposite the reservoir and similarly on the southern side of the reservoir there are also a heap of small warungs selling tackle and bait. For the tilapia I recommend a small piece of worm about a metre under a float. For the ocean side, small pieces of prawn on a multihook paternoster rig works best, with a small sinker. Keep your hooks small (size 10's) and your line very light (4lb is plenty - fluorocarbon works best as leader) :wink: 8) . East of but running more or less parallel to Jl. Legian in Legian is a small river I used to fish quite often when my wife and I had our kos there. The fishing was similar to the reservoir I describe above, but seemed to fish best when the water was higher and flowing more strongly. There are a heap of spots along it that would be fine to take a youngster (and others that aren't so good). In the ocean, I've caught a few fish on the southern side of the main shipping channel out of Benoa harbour, in Benoa. There's quite a few places all around Benoa to have a crack at where access is a possibility, just be mobile and use the same tactics like how we fish for whiting back home. As far as fish farms are concerned, can help you out with plenty in Java but sorry can help you with Bali. There was a thread just recently about kolam pancing, i'll see if I can dig it up. There is 1 that I know of, not far from Sanur. I believe the street name is (jalan profesor Doktor Ida Bagus Mantra) but if you're on the bypass going in direction of Denpasar just after sanur, you can go to the right (big road) in direction of ubud. There is a large gerbang kota (Ida Bagus Mantra) and just after that (or before I forgot), but very close on the right side is a small kolam pancing. Last time I fished there was in October, make sure to borrow/rent a fishing rod from them as the fish seem to have teeth and will bite your line if you dont use steel wire. I was hoping to find a place where I could do some fly fishing, but have'nt found a good spot yet :-)

Are there any fisherman out there? I have been deep sea jigging a few times and landed some cracking Big Reds but i am looking for some good spots to beach fish. I have seen a vid of someone landing a GT off one of the beaches but no idea which beach it was. Anybody know any good beach spots on Bali?

I will soon be accused of being in the real estate business, since this will be the third time I have boosted West Bali in the past week. In order to honestly answer your question have to say that West Bali is a reasonable destination. It means surf casting as the method unless you choose to just cast with a substantial sinker and wait for the tide to come in. It is truly unfortunate that we no longer have a personal message option on this site because an in-depth conversation between two fishermen is going to bore the Hell out of everyone else. I have attempted similar questions such as yours in the past and never received interested replies.

In reflection I should add that about every 10 days I must evacuate from my hibernation and hazard a trip south for provisions. When that happens I would be happy to meet and discuss fishing with you. If you reply I will be able to suggest a meeting in Sanur and when.

Haha this wouold not be the first time I have bored other people with fishing talk i am sure! So west Bali hey, what parts have you tried out? I have tried at Canggu but not much further north, did not have much luck as i was loosing rigs on submerged rocks alot. I am not in Bali at the moment but should be back for a visit in December and then for a long spell from March, would be good to meet up and chat. We are looking into setting up a branch of our business there so if it goes well the move to Bali might be premanent - which gives me plenty of time to talk fishing and check out all the spots! :-)

We take a boat out ... our guy caught 6 mackeral yesterday ..... i have heard good stories fishing from echo beach rocks, nice red emperor ....same east bali, over candidasa way

When you say you take a boat out do you mean a prahu or what type of boat? Always interested but please elaborate. Thanks
