Hi all, in Bali at last. Well I got here 6 weeks ago and the house was not finished, even if I was told it was.Electricity meter was not even installed; apparently they did not have any in stock. It was installed yesterday (not the real one, i will elaborate on this later). Many problems with the house, lots of things did not work, not done properly. Many other not finished or not even started. They also have to change many floor tiles all over the house and also wall tiles in the bathrooms and 3 windows (should be more) and 3 doors. They have damaged one bidet an 1 wash basing, also 1 water tap. Not water in the kitchen, no gutter around the roof, .........the list its very long.Probably will move into the house in 6 days timeWe are in hotel accommodation since we've moved to Bali. We are having a big issue with the developer about who's going to pay for the hotel + + The house, for them, was ready on the 25th of December 2008 and told us we could have move.I hope everything will be ok soon and forget all about this very stressing experience.I HAVE ONE QUESTION:Where can I buy some crickets for my gecko? They must sell them somewhere. I am getting tired to run around to capture them, this is not a joke, I'm actually do this every day. In Bandung I was buying them in the local market, not available in pet shops. I tried some pet shop here in Bali with the same results.ThanksLumumba

I think you can make a few local boys very happy by assigning them as Cricket Catchers for an according salary :)

When you said you were running around trying to catch crickets on your own, the first thing that came to mind was some local kids looking at you going "what the hell is she doing?" and offering to do it for you.

Hi,I did but now they are getting laze and since they started going back to school it is not very easy to get them to do so.I hope someone will give me an address where I can buy them.L.

I have been to many pet shops around the south and can not say that I have ever seen them. Good luck on your hunt.

Try the bird market in Denpasar. I'm sure you can get them there.
lumumba
Hi Mimpimanis,Even in Bandung I could not get them in the pet shop, only in the local markets and not in every one.ThanksHi Chickchili,Great help, can you please give me some directions (or the near location) on how to get to the market. :?: THANKS A LOTL.
calitobali
from east gatsu (Jl Gatot Subroto Timor) turn south onto Jl Nangka. The road will come to an intersection where you cannot go straight, so go left and then right and then right again, to get back onto that one way road that you couldn't access from Jl Nangka. The bird market will be on the right hand side.

Sorry to hear about the problems to your house and I would be very interested to know more about them and any advice you would care to share with us all about causes and effects. About the geckos, is it just me? I could swear that I have seen a number of small greenish lizards running around free that I presumed where a part of the local fauna and quite able to survive without recourse to human intervention. As a matter of fact I would be glad if they were not in all the rooms that I inhabit. I like them as a group but even when I am expecting them I still jump when I go into the bathroom and half a dozen run for the exits. Why are you needing to feed yours? Or are you using the crickets as bait in some secret gecko recipe passed down for generations in your family? If so please share the recipe...

Its in a cage?

I'm guessing it could be one of those big nasty bastard species perhaps, the ones that I must clear out of our kitchen (mostly) in Java at night else the missus screams the house down worse than the nip the suckers invariably give me. And she was born and raised there but they still freak her out  ......Haven't seen the big turbo charged Javan mega-gecko in Bali but, do they exist there, if anyone knows what the hell I'm on about :P  Is that the species you have Lumumba?Eisemans' old book mentions cricket fighting as a Balinese tradition, but in all the time I've spent in Bali I've never heard boo about it. All my Balinese friends have looked at me like I've got three heads when I've quizzed them about the practice - anybody seen or heard about cricket fighting or is it just another long dead practice in favour of playing with their long-legged feathered rats????  Why are you needing to feed yours?
Fair dinkum or what????       It's a pet duh......

anybody seen or heard about cricket fighting or is it just another long dead practice
Yes, cricket fighting still alive and well in Tukad mungga [nr Lovina]. They are kept in special "cricket boxes" with compartments for each individual cricket.

Hi,Yesterday I went to the bird market and got lots and lots of crickets for 100g. They are selling them by weight: 12.000rp for 100g, minimum order 50g. Thanks for the info about the Market. On the way back a motorbike hit the site of my car. I was waiting for the traffic light to change and when it did I moved foreword very slow since I had a BMW in front. This bloody idiot came from no ware and hit the car on the left site. This what he said: he taught I was going to turn right. So, he must have decided to turn right without even looking. I believe he was waiting next to my rear left wheel.Pretending to be upset and telling me that it was my fault. The police got out of the little box on the corner of the road to join us.Quick solution coming from the officer: He told the driver that it was his fault and to try to sort it out among ourselves, otherwise you can go to court. Lots of talking.............and after about 1 hour, when the policeman got really upset with him and decided to collect our car and motor documents he paid 250.000rp which it is what I have to pay for each insurance claim. Am I happy with this? Not really since tomorrow I have to take the car to the garage and get it back in 3 days time. I have also to hire a car or a motorbike at my own expenses with all the inconveniences attached. Also my insurance next year will not go down as much as it would have............ Not a lot of damage but the car looks like sh**.Hi BERT,It is in a glass cage, more like an aquarium (50x40x30) with a perforated top. There is a peace of bamboo so he can hide, a little branch to climb own and water.MARKIT & ADAMI will get back to you asap. Just to let you know that it is a TOKEK. Nearly 30cm long, including the tiles and 4 cm wide. Colour: light gray/sky blue with red dots all over. The nasty bastard species I believe are different and called CICAK and are much, much smaller.RegardsL.

Hi, back again.Adam & Markit; I got this big gecko in Bandung (west Java) about 6 months ago. Came into the back garden at night and got it with the fishing net. At that time was half of the size.Just b4 leaving to come to Bali there was an article on a local paper and TV about this type of gecko and the possibility to find whose is willing to pay a lots of money for such a gecko. We are talking up 300 to 400 millions, or even more. Some have gone for more than 1.200.000.000. For a normal one (without red dots and gray/black colour) if they are 300-350g will fetch 5.000.000/150.Even b4 knowing this I was going to keep it as a pet (don't know why since they have to stay in the dark so not to get stressed and to be able to achieve this I put some material around the cage and this will stop me looking at the creature) now knowing that it could earn me some bread even more. Will it happen? This is a different story.Just find out: my neighbor, 4 houses away, got one in the cage and he already sold one 5 months ago in Java for 5.000.000rp, now he will get this one to about 350g to get extra money. If you look on the web you'll be surprised how many are will to buy the geckos, most in Jakarta, and most of them are agents so the price will drop a lot since they are re-selling and must make profit. Anyway, I have seen many geckos since moved to Bali but not like the one I have.Apparently has to do with Chinese thinking they bring luck if you have one and also about some sort of medical cure but I can't remember much about all this.Nothing to hope for but I will keep you posted. Since everything it's based on weight I need the crickets to get it fat................. :P L.

Hi Lumumba,Yeah, thats the little beastie, it's called a Tokay Gecko and they've got a nasty disposition in my experience! :) The first one I ever came across surprised me big time time, my experience with gecko's is that are normally quite timid but when my wife asked me to remove it from the kitchen the sucker latched straight on! Being an Aussie I'm quite used to reptiles but this really gave me quite a shock and I'm a lot more cautious with the bloody things nowdays  My family hates them (just the big ones, for what reason, god only knows  ) so if I don't give them amnesty they get swatted with the broom. We've got plenty of 'em and they grow pretty damn big, would've seen them to a foot or more I reckon. Are you for real about their value  ??? Pretty sad if thats the case, wild animals should have no value and be allowed to roam free, especially in a place like Indo where mother nature needs all the help she can get :( . I hope my villagers don't wake up to this, as nasty as they are it's still nice to see them. Maybe you could try and get a breeding pair and supply the Jakarta markets responsibly? That would be an interesting money spinner I reckon  8) I'm sure my family would learn to love them if they realised how valuable they may be   :lol:Sorry to hear about your car accident. You must not be bule but, right, otherwise it surely would have been your fault???  8) 8) Kind regardsAdamP.S. MatThanks for that. Would like to see it one day, thats the first I've heard about it even existing!!!

by Markit on Mon Aug 03, 2009 11:31 amSorry to hear about the problems to your house and I would be very interested to know more about them and any advice you would care to share with us all about causes and effects.
Hi MarkitAbout the house problems I think you should buy the 50 pages book I just published about this subject. JOKE but could be easily be true.About the causes it is very simple answer: The TUKANG(S)About the advice: you have to supervise what they are doing ALL THE TIME and even so you only need to turn around for a few minutes and this is it........ From Bandung I could not have done much supervision but our next door neighbour, who is living in Bali in a rented accommodation until the house ready, and coming also from Bandung, was supervising the worker nearly every day, even so they encounter many problems and still in the rented accommodation.Last week we went for lunch, about 1 hour, and when back they managed to paint one door that was not supposed to be painted, we told them about this the day b4. I was going to do it myself (still have to do it) since I like DIY and also because the have painted this bloody door twice and made a mess. Just to give you an idea about the 3 windows: they have cut them so much that there was e gap between the windows and the frame, you could see the light. On others the glass was too short for the beading going around. Two of them also did not even close. They have installed to indoor doors instead of outdoors. Under the sun they got deformed. When they had to change the tiles around the washbasin they use the electrical cutter you can imagine what they did to the washbasin. The gutter which we paid extra to have it done in December was not up. From the photos they have sent us in January the gutter was not up so we told them....................yes,yes,yes. They put it up in the second week we got here, result: not straight, not enough support and the pipe coming down to the ground was like if a blind person worked on it. When I've asked them why there is a meter difference from the top to the bottom(not straight) the answer was: because at the bottom we have the PAM pipes running under ground and we canot dig there. I have to tell them what to do, and even so for them was ok the way was done. DON'T WANT TO LEARN. This was at the front of the house. After 3 days they did the back of the house, what do you think happened? Same thing but this time not because of the PAM pipes but because they are ..............Guess what happen to the gutter when did rain.............the front was half off and so was the back. After this they had to put it up 2 more times, since the second time they made another big mess. So at this point I send them all out and ask the developer to send other contractors in. They put it up again and still up since they had to do exactly what I've told them to do.You can give a tukang some really good stuff like; new door handle, new door, new hinges, new tap water and so on and they manage to ruing most of it. This is not only based on this experience, we had problems even in the Bandung's house, maybe less, but still problems of doing a job that it is not where near a good standard. Most of the material the shops are selling its good until a tukang puts his hands on. We want to talk about the toilet, ok here we are:There was a ghastly stench coming from the down stairs toilet. Q: what the hell is going on A: must be a dead cut. Q: but I don't bloody see any dead cut in the toilet. A: not in the toilet but outside. I do not see any cut dead or a life outside. A: maybe over the other site of the wall. But the smell it is only inside the toilet and not bloody outside and the window and the door were closed all night. At this point I didn't want anymore answer from them. I told them to take the loo off the floor and check that the rubber that stops the smell it is in place. This is what they did very, very, very reluctantly like if I've told them to go and play with traffic on the motorway. Conclusion: The rubber was not missing, wait for this one: when they installed the loo for the first time (who did it????) they measured (did they????) the distance from the wall to make the hole on the floor they made a mess in the measurements. When they put the loo on top for the first time they realized that the hole should have been at least 8cm near to the wall. Now some NORMAL and I will repeat NORMAL person would re do the work, not so, what they did decided to break more cement around the hole and cat half of the rubber, the one supposed to stop the smell, to be able to put the loo on top of the hole. The result of this action was: first the sh** was dropping on the cement than sliding down in to the plastic pipe. Do I need to add anything else??I could go on for a long time, of course now the place looks very good, also because I have started re-paint almost everything and make some adjustments. I hope you have really enjoyed this, me probably a bit less. RegardsL.
