Obtain a V.O.A. (visa on arrival) at the airport. This can later be extend by 30 days. In my case (Oct 2017) it took less than one month to get the "telex visa", but you never know. When you have this you need to leave the country to collect your KITAS visa. Usually SGP is the easiest. As for an agent, indeed it depend where you will decide to settle down. Better choose one near your place to avoid too much travelling. I did a search on the net, selected 3 agents, send them an email, and visited them in the first days of my stay. Then selected the one I decided to use.

Cost is around 9.000.000 IDR (includes MERP) . Note that you will have to provide (among other documents) proof of having a lodging for that year, paid in advance 1 year. But I guess you know that already, and that you also have the full list of requirements for retirement visa ? Being myself a "newbie" compared to many fellow expats here, difficult for me to recommend a specific agent. But do search on the Internet, and some names will come (its not like there are 100's of them), let us know which ones you have in mind or have contacted so maybe we can give some comment / advice. Thank you. MERP? If you could give me the full list of requirements that would be great. I have researched on the net, contacted one agent and she said ....... For apply visa we need scan of first passport page, house rent agreement for 1 year, incurance, bank statement (2000 usd ballance is enoug), marry sertificate. Cost 8000 000 idr. Also you will pay visa fee in embassy around 105 USD Think she Is a little off with 2k in the bank! Any exact figures would be appreciated.

Sorry mate, I dont want to be harsh but if you stated exactly your situation it would be easier for us to assist. First you say you're looking for retirement visa, now you add that you're married etc.….. Married with Indo national or non-Indo national ? It are different situations , hence different rules. No way to give "exact" figures without "exact" information. Same goes when you speak to any agent, give them your exact situation and precisely what you are looking for, to avoid both of you wasting time going in wrong directions. It's not that difficult, I did all the preparation work and documents from overseas !

Thanks Ron for your information. I submitted questions to Bali IDE and all I hear is crickets. I’m not sure if I’m asking dumb questions are what! Searching the Web for Kitas requirements, I find you need to be in good health and good character, others say you need health, life and liability insurance! Is it possible to get those insurances in Bali for reasonable price?

Thank you Balifrog! It sounds like you are concerned about my situation and may try to help me. I appreciate that! Let me articulate my retirement adventure. I am 79 and going strong. I only have my Social Security, $1500 mo, and my VA medical benefits with a Medicare Card. Once I determine that I could qualify for a retirement visa, I would fly to Bali for a month to see if you guys are just stirring the pot or is it really as beautiful as it seems. Thence I would fly back to the States, get my ducks in a row, return to Bali and live happily ever after! Problem....at my age, I don’t think I can afford three insurances, life, health and liability as they indicate! Therefore, you maybe wasting your time. If you guys think I should just stay home, say that too! I appreciate everyone’s thoughts and opinions. Cowabunga

For what it is worth, my Indonesian wife feels it is a lot safer than in Bandung and Java generally. She feels the notions of Karma in the local religion have an inhibiting effect on crime. Mind you, there are many non Balinese Indonesians live here too but my overall impression is that it's a comfortable place to be.

Another question I have been told that shipping any goods to Bali is problematic. Maybe money/tax to pay, import duties to customs, even on used household goods. I will just have linen, one small cupboard, one medium box of kitchen items. ( all used ) and some used clothing. Was told to look for a local moving company in Bali and not to use an International company from Australia. Any ideas would be appreciated.
