Ubud..a place of artists, yes indeed, but so commercialised that to me it is just an other touristic place... and people are still building...It is less romantic (image of artists and hippies) than I was told, maybe it was this way 30 years ago...but not anymore. And I also see artists struggling to sell their art, I know how hard that is ... I don't like to see this, but it seems it is their fate where ever they live.. But then...even the good selling artists (5 figures in Euro) have their struggles... The only thing I can do is... ? To buy a small painting, which I don't like and I don't need, only to support an artist I like? I don't know...it doesn't feel good...Mmm... I'll stop talking, maybe I am too tired of touristplaces...Ubud... nice windy, and expecting a huge rainfall... ( I can hear Peter Gabriel singing " rain, falling down on me..")Ubud greetings, MiSO Oh, Penari, welcome!

""even the good selling artists (5 figures in Euro)"" you mean 4 zero's before the comma?as in for example 10.000,= euro?? per piece or per month income? If it's per piece...that must be some piece of art, Personally haven't seen anything worth more then 250 dollars tops!if it's per month... a balinese making for example 1000 euro isn't struggling, let alone one thats making 10.000,=Penari has danced his way in to the forum 6 months ago...and danced right on out

Gilbert, my Balinese family is in Campuhan, Ubud and own a gallery called Ngurah KK Gallery. Ngurah, is considered the father of the Young Artist Style although he paints in many different styles. He is mentioned in the Twenty Famous Artisans of Bali, along with a number of art books in Europe. His art sells for more than a few hundred dollars. He won back in l983 in Vienna for the Wild Animal Fund. It was an impressionist style of a Sea Turtle which was made into a postage stamp for Austria. I have sold his works in America for thousands of dollars. His son, I Gusti Agung, art sells no less than $3500.00 generally speaking here in the US...a larger picture usually sells for $6000.00. I currently have Ngurah's collection of the Young Artist Style, one of which was selling for $12,000.00 back in the 80's in Zurich, Switzerland. I want to sell it for no less than $l00,000.00 today. It is a priceless piece. I will, however, give you the fact that alot of artists in Ubud are generally your more commercial type one might say; not fine art. They, of course, sell for very little.Ngurah's art is at Neka Museum and other Museum's in Ubud, along with Museum's in Europe. He studied under Arie Smit who considers Ngurah is one true protege. Hai Judy...Yeah the arts you mention are not sold roadside Ubud, but in the USA...and I seriously doubt if the art you are talking about, I mean fine and well made would sell for the same overhere. How's that 'saying' beauty is an the eye of the beholder...or something like that? I mean it's relative to someone likings...some people would pay topdollar (prices you mention) for a painting, other people could say about the same painting, my niece/nephew of 5 could make that...know what I mean?Personally when I talk about art (paintings), names like van Gogh, Rembrandt, Vermeer, (more recent painters) Dali, Picasso pop in my mind...not the name of Ngurah or agung. But like I said to each his own :) .friendly greetings, gilbert.

Gilbert, the art gallery I am referring to is NGURAH KK GALLERY in Campuhan outside of ubud it is on the main road where the beautiful trees hang over the street. Ngurah has sold his art for NOT a couple of hundred dollars at his gallery....for thousands. Agungs also have sold for thousands at the Gallery. Therefore, your assumption that there is no art in Bali being sold for thousands is not the case. Of course, their is mucho commercial art. Agung is a realist. Using a painstaking technique whereby he cuts the brush down to allow for extremely detailed application. Additionally, his black on white, is a very difficult technique; realism again. Only his uncle had this particular style. The artist cannot make a mistake on the canvas or the entire painting is kaput. Don't think your nephews or nieces could duplicate this style in a million years nor for that matter thousands of artists. Also dilutes the paint with a particular medium.True art is in the eye of the beholder. Naturally Van Gogh, Matisse, Chigall, Monet, Georgia O'keffe, Picasso, etc, etc, etc, and all the other greats for that matter achieved the classification of FINE ART. Some while alive others after their death unfortunately. Ngurah and Agung are lucky enough to be classified as fine art; and did not have to die first before they sold a painting for thousands of dollars. 8)

Penari has left the building? Mmm...well, let's use her thread to babble...maybe she'll join us.Btw, I think Lovina centre is a sweet place...
