I moved into my house because it was nice and quiet - up a small lane which is a dead end. There is a bit of vacant land around with lots of coconut and mango trees. This morning on the land next to our house, someone made a small clearing. I thought they were going to have a ceremony or something.
Later someone set up a table selling drinks and then lots of guys started arriving on motorbikes. They laid out a ground sheet and then I could see what was going on - cricket fighting!
I don't know whether to call the police, join in or start selling cold drinks!

Hadn't heard of it - but it looks interesting - maybe you have a very special location.
From your options - I'd go for selling cold drinks

I second that,,

Can't be any worse than cock fighting? Probably a lot more interesting - personally I found cock fighting mindlessly boring, would rather see dead chickens at KFC.

did you have a can of bug spray handy

Maybe I could sell tours to the tourists here? :)
One of my worries was that it would be cock fighting next. There are a few places around my house that always seem to be having fights. I think much of the land around Lovina is being sold because the owners lost money gambling.

it disgusts me.

I have heard so many similar stories Gilbert. I don't think it is just Indonesia, Asians in general seem to be some of the heaviest gamblers in the world.
Our neighbor lives in a real basic house with no proper windows or doors because her husband spends all of his salary on gambling.
I have never lived in the south, but I wonder if it is the same situation down there? I walk past the places that have cock fighting and they are packed with guys any day of the week. It makes me wonder what they are all doing for money.

spicyayam wrote "I think much of the land around Lovina is being sold because the owners lost money gambling." I think so too..Not feeling sorry for those who can't handle their finances better...little story from a while back(4 months aor so) : a friend of mine had a nice piece of land, has been in his family for a long long time, he had to sell that because of gambling-debts, had some leftover so he bought a car, I asked him why not put the rest in a bankaccount? He answered so he and the family could go in 'style' to the pura and upacara's...few weeks back he sold the car. Debts again and because the car needed new tires and STNK (tax) had to be paid is what he said, when I asked him why he sold it...
He's still gambling, with borrowed money...hope he wins because those "collector's" from a little popular tourist-spot in the north don't kid around...
Personally I'm with aquaman on this...I don't like (hate) people who see this as entertainment, but on the other hand it's embedded in the Bali (perhaps Indonesian ?) life.
Police will also take no action against cock or cricket-fighting, because of this.
So spicyayam it's best to just join in, just don't loose your house/car  .
friendly greetings...gilbert.

yeah back in Amsterdam the Chinese are notorious gamblers, have their own little illegal places to gamble.
Me neither, never lived in the south but I do know of a pretty big 'gudang' that is being used in the evenings for balinese cardgames. don't know about chickenfights down south, or how those guys finance their hobby or maybe they are professional gamblers?

However, in my view, simply on the basis as following,
99% male in Bali = gambler + drunkard + playboy
1% male in Bali = sport fan + apart from above listed = married

You must be mixing in the wrong crowds then. Maybe because of where you live.

Is this assertion of yours an attempt at being "funny" or are you really serious? I can't tell.
If you're not joking, you obviously know sweet FA about Balinese males, possibly even males in general.
Are you a boy or a girl, in reality? Your avatar suggests a decent-looking SE Asian female.
Are you married? If you're not from Bali originally as your posts seem to suggest, where are you from and what are you doing in Kuta? Are you a reverse-misogynist, or something like that?

One thing is for sure.....If you are not married your chances of being os are less than 1% :D
