Angie
I am planning to be in Bali August and September and am tired of taxis and relying on friends so want to take the plunge and hire a bike.
Do most people just take a risk and hope their international drivers licence and a small payment will appease the cops if pulled over?
Is it possible for me to get a licence once I am in Bali? If so, is it a simple process and any idea on what its likely to cost me?
Tracey
Angie,
I am led to believe it is a pretty quick & simple process.
Although I am planning to get my motorbike license here, so I will be able to ride over there...eventually!
Good Luck, let us know how you go...
P.S. Anyone thinking of being in Bali around this time, run to the hills, if Angie is let loose on a bike!!!!

An international drivers license will do. If its for MOTOR BIKES.
I believe only Kitas holder can obtain a Indonesian Drivers license.
I have Indonesian licenses for car and motor bike.

Bert/Angie,
I am almost certain i know of people going to get a motorbike license on holiday in Bali, a quick simple test, I mean simple!!!
I don't think they had a Kitas, either.
I think they paid a little too, but it was good during their stay....
Angie, maybe ask Nick???

Angie, my suggestion is to get an international driving licnese as it is a good idea to become well accustomed to it before you get there. The traffic is hectic and a sudden swirf on the bike from left to right is needed sometimes.
When you have an indonesian license or an international one is not going to make any difference with being stopped or not, you remain a foreigner and own more then the local people. Be ultimately surprised..not agitated..as you were doing the right things:.speed, helmet etc and wander why you were stopped...if you talk in very quick english or preferably any other language you often will get off.. otherwise the fee of 10000(1$) is the minimum as money for a "smoke"... stay cool and do not loose your patience..
