Hey there!
Hope all is well.
I was considering going to Bali in the first week of november, but after all that has happened, I am not sure if it's a good idea.
Maybe you can tell me?
Is it ok to visit for a week? or is the timiing wrong, because of the earthquake and the attacks? wouldn't these unfortunate events make all activities slow down or get cancelled?
i appreciate if you could help.
If not, well, good luck anyways!
Thanx.
Marianne.

The Bali earthquake lasted less than a minute with very little damage.
If you mean the Sumatran earthquake - that doesn't effect Bali at all.
And I must have missed something - what attacks???
Adam
Jakarta perhaps?????

ahh that already seems so long ago - I was thinking something more recent!

Perfect example of how much that actually had an effect on the safety in Bali, and why it shouldn't be a concern for the original poster coming here.

When I read this post earlier I thought - did I miss something?
Attacks? Earthquake?
And then ……“is it ok to visit for a week” !
Crikey what is this poster thinking. Could this be an indication of what is generally assumed by the average Bali bound tourist?

The attacks means for hepatitis virus (HBV-DNA)?! If yes, I heard since last week, result in that I had to wash my hands at first after back to home...
Dasha
The attacks mean Hep  Ummmm ...what!
Can someone please come to the rescue and tell me what is wrong with Bali. I have been following the threads here , on a daily basis, for months now with little comment .....as it's pretty humdrum , but this latest news on attacks has me stumped!
The earthquake. Is that the one Doris Dazed told me about 2 or 3 Saturday's ago that rocked the house early in the morning around 6.00am on an email and the one Mimp has spoken about?
calitobali
Well you being from Australia must already be used to the Australian media bashing Bali, and stopped paying it any mind a long time ago.
Yea, the first post is a little excessive though, nothing to worry about over here.

Yes it's Ok to visit for a week, a month, whatever.
The earthquake was 1,800Km from here and earthquakes only affect a small area - maybe 100 Km or so. Remember Indonesia is a BIG COUNTRY (now where have I heard that phrase before).
And like others I wonder what attacks - haven't noticed anything.
No nothing is slowing down - and there are no more cancellations than usual.
Hey, it's a few days since you posted - what are you thinking now?

I did not repond to the original post: it just sounded too much like baiting.

Yes I think that's the case Calitobali. Because we hear so much media nonsense here regarding warnings about traveling to Indonesia you get used to it and assume everyone else knows it's just ridiculous.
IMHO it's safer to travel to Indo than to travel here. I read some statistics a while back on how many tourists actually dropped dead whilst on holidays here in Australia and form memory it was staggering to learn how high it was.
You could be right there too Daniel - this poster does sound a little strange.

Cali and Dash,
Too true. Sadly Aussie news media is as crap as it is paranoid, the paranoia seeming to stem from being the place that something disastrous rarely ever happens (a good thing or a bad thing ??? ) where even a dog stuck down a wombat hole gets 3 days TV coverage.
BUT, to it's defense I will say that Indo and most specifically Bali holds a special place in a lot of Aussies' hearts, so i'm sure undoubtably gets a lot more attention in Aussie media than that of other western countries. In Western Australia alone I think the figure is something like 50% have visited Bali at least once in their lives. Balinese issues are not completely foreign so of course get publicity in the media, whether rightly or wrongly. The continuously contentious one is the DFAT travel warning. Does a terror risk exist in Indo? Well, yeah, it wasn't that long ago what happened in Jakarta and if anyone thinks Bali has security measures (or attitudes  ) even remotely close enough to ensure it doesn't happen there (again), they are kidding themselves. But does that stop people coming in there droves, nah, not really, as like you say Dash, I honestly feel safer in Bali than I do here in Oz. At the very least, the squeaky wheel gets the oil so it's better to face the problems than to try to ignore them and pretend they don't exist, don't you reckon???

Actually from Ithe statistics I've seen an Aussie tourist has a greater chance of dying travelling in Indonesia than an overseas tourist has dying in Australia. Not an astronomical difference but still that's what I've read. Apparently more Aussies die in Thailand though :( In 2008/2009 New Zealand was the safest of popular Aussie destinations (probably because all the Kiwis live in OZ).
And I'm no fan of the media but the fact is more Aussies have died in Indonesia from terrorist attacks than in any other country (all in the last 10 years). So I don't think anyone can rationaly argue that travel warnings issued by the Government aren't valid or responsibly required to be issued.
Like many does it stop me from travelling to or considering living in Bali? No!
Dasha
Yep dead right Adam.
What gets my goat up is the whole terrorism issue. I've been watching quite a few docos lately on Frontline and Vuze TV about conspiracy theories and why we had 1st WW 2nd WW Korea Vietnam and now the Bush Wars 1990s and 2000s. And stuff on the Central Bank. Now don't get me wrong, I hope I don't sound like a conspiracy nut, but i have never believed up until recently in this kind of thing. For 8 years the 9 11 bombings were carried out only by Middle Eastern terrorists..... but now I am not so sure!
It seems to be coming very apparent to me now that certain wealthy and powerful groups or a single group promote fear through wars and terrorism in order to get control of the human race in many ways. The amount of people dieing from terrorism vs those dieing from no access to clean drinking water is about 5000 to 1. I fear for those dieing in poorer countries for obvious reasons than the rest of us from terrorism. And I think Marriane nails it down pretty much in this post on how ridiculous it is to worry about the chances of being blown up in Bali.
As for earthquakes..... well we had 200 people pass away earlier this year here in Melbourne from fire so I wonder what's going on her head there! Natural disasters, like shite, happen!
