What happened to the "this forum stinks" thread? C'mon, this is silly to delete a thread when it may have brought up some good conversation. For those that didn't see it, someone started a thread commenting on the state of the forum. I don't think it lasted more than an hour or two and I only saw it because I live on the other side of the world and it is daytime.

Agreed. Censorship is not a suitable solution IMHO, unless when it turns to insults and nasty personal attacks. Was it?This is indeed quite funny to hear that such thread has been deleted while some posts echanged by users in other threads sometimes revert to name calling and are not moderated.
fadmin
Hi,I don't think that a thread, starting like that, is respectful to the forum as a whole. Its fine to discuss the forum, but this post looked like flaming to me.

Hi y'all,I have to agree with Teddy....why start a topic with the name 'this forum stinks' :?:No mather what is posted in the thread, the headline is already wrong, at least that's my humble opinion. If one wants to discuss the likes and dislikes of this forum and on this forum, I would suggest starting a thread like this ' pro's and con's of a forum' thinks that more a suitable way of using appropriate language....'stinks' is a bit harsh and I think using that word would lead to to some...liberated use of language(namecalling and such), and doesn't really add anything to the forum, And Teddy might get overworked from all the mod edit  , hihihi.Sorry for the BEEP you had to make in my post, I translated the word I used straight from dutch, and didn't mean a person but the actual place where it comes out, ahum, sorry again, hihihi.Take care y'all, friendly greetings..........Gilbert.

Teddy, Wow, I respectfully disagree. So now we have word police on the forum? And the police decide to delete one as slightly offensive as "stink'? And isn't it convenient that we are now deleting uncomfortable ideas because of the poster's choice of words?I am extremely offended that some suggest support for assaulting the president of the United States but that post still stands. Where were you with that one? Why is it still standing? So I guess the forum adminstrator is ok with a felony offense but not ok with saying the forum stinks. I now wonder what other posts I have been missing, that were deleted prior to me reading them. So if possible please post yet another pinned thread suggesting what words are forbidden. I am confused. Is " offensively odorous" allowed? How about "malodorous"? Is "redolent of flatulence' allowed? Isn't this a bit silly? Oh, sorry I hope the word "silly" doesn't get the post deleted. Sir Francis Bacon said:"A forbidden writing is thought to be a certain spark of truth, that flies up in the face of them who seek to tread it out."I am uncomfortable with the thought of deleting threads on a FORUM and I think others are as well. I would hope that it would be used for something a bit more serious than the word "stink". Speaking of respect, I think not deleting it would have been showing more respect to the members of this forum.KaBIm - the only think that could have been taken offense was the title. I think it was posted by Sidney Mike. It wasn't more than 5-6 sentences.

Come on Jim, things get deleted on forums all the time.... Its the nature of the game."Forbidden writings" ? I don't think there is any book burning done here.....Telling the (active) members they stink because there were not enough posts in the weeks Mike wasn't here (actually there were quite a number of posts) is useless, and doesn't add anything useful.I agree, it was a flame post, it has nothing to do with "forbidden words".
gilbert de jong
Jim...I was giving MY opinion, how you go from MY opinion, to a forum word-police is beyond me  As the rest of your post is all related to the non-existing 'word' policy. I'll stop elaberating.friendly greetings....Gilbert.
Jimbo
The forum is fine and the moderation, moderate :D
mimpimanis
I'm with Jimbo. And we have to remember we are guests here. If someone thinks the forum stinks
well they can hit up all the other Bali forums or maybe start an interesting post.
ronb
I also support the current moderator. Decisions need to be made quickly and I see no point in trying to argue the point.

Bert,As you know, deleting posts has been controversial. I was hoping that the last deletion incident would have served as a reminder that deletion of posts is something that many on the forum would feel strongly about...and be used only as a last result. It wasn't, it was used for the slightest reason. For the word "stink". Gilbert, my post wasn't addressed to you. Please re-read the first word "Teddy". I think you have added a lot to the forum and it would be a shame if your posts were deleted because you used the wrong english word, don't you think? A "non-existent word policy"? Is it fantasy that a post was deleted for language and thought? How can you say it is non-existent in the face of the deletion? I firmly believe that as a member of good standing on this forum, you should be able to post your opinion, just as I am doing. In fact, I partly was thinking of protecting YOUR speech when I decided to start this thread. So I think you have misunderstood what I wrote and why.Jimbo and Mimpimanis, Again, respectfully, how would you know what was moderated? I am not disrespecting your mental abilities, I am questioning the ability to monitor the forum 24/7. Did you know the thread was deleted? How many others have had their posts deleted? I don't know and unless you are Teddy, you don't know either. I am uncomfortable that the post was deleted because it annoyed someone and that it was done in what was the dead of night for most of you.As far as I can see, Sidney Mike is a member of good standing on the forum with 70+ posts. He should have the ability to make comments regarding the forum...I know that Teddy has a tough job. I wouldn't want it. But since Teddy took it doesn't mean that he/she can't be criticized. This was a poor use of the delete button.P.S. So when is the post advocating injuring the president of the United States coming down? That certainly doesn't add to the forum and I find it extremely, EXTREMELY disrespectful to some members of the forum.
Markit
Try writing an article for the New York Times with the headline "The New York Times Stinks" think that will get printed in the land of the free, home of the brave?Don't you just love people that can take offence when it suits them? Now threatening to injure the president of the United States? Hmmm, don't think that's even a crime in the USA and for damn sure isn't anywhere else. About it being offensive, I'm an American and I'm not at all offended but I guess there isn't much out there that isn't "offensive" to somebody. Like maybe if someone had a cannon for an Avatar that might be quite offensive to pacifists or maybe Americans that misuse the English term for "a small group of houses in the country" or "thorpe" as an internet name...
Jim Thorpe
Markit,Actually, most online newspapers will allow you to post comments with just about any title you want, including "the Des Moines Register STINKS" as a title.Don't you just love people that can take offence when it suits them?
That is my point exactly! Thank you for supporting it. Now threatening to injure the president of the United States? Hmmm, don't think that's even a crime in the USA and for damn sure isn't anywhere else.
Maybe not but is certainly advocates violence and who knows what will happen as this guy will attest...http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 707AAmIDtZAnd again thank you for supporting what I have been saying. :?
Markit
Ha, ha, don't you just love people that can take support wherever it suits them? :)

The deleted post was mine. I would like to set the record straight, if I may. Firstly, my post could not in any way have been considered to be abusive or disrespectful. I used no profanity. Neither did I use the words "This forum stinks" in either the header or the body of my post.I simply suggested that the forum appeared to be dying and asked for suggestions as to how some energy might be brought back.If Admin wish to challenge these facts I would challenge them to post my original meaasges again. To delete such a post is, IMHO, childish in the extreme and represents selfish and petty cencorship in the extreme.I would futher note that I have received no PM or other message from Admin advising me of what rules may have been contravened or otherwise explaining the deletion of the post. These are the facts, so other posters please review your opinions accordingly.
sydneymike
I'm not sure what is happening but when I logon on some occasions I see the original posts again. If everyone can see them then that will confirm my points above.I was sincerely seeking discussion and ideas because this forum has been very helpful to me and would like to see it flourish.
gilbert de jong
Hi SidneyM,I can't see the original post you've made that was deleted, but now there seems to be two or three threads about the same subject. At least you're not bored anymore now, assuming you mentioned being bored on the original post?Hi JimT,I do understand what you mean, and thanks for sticking up for freedom of speech(mine and others) but if the Fadmin says he/she deleted it because it looked like a 'flaming post', we or I can only accept that and move on. I can understand it would be somewhat hard to swallow if one's post get deleted. Not yet happened to me, and hopefully also won't happen in the future. Most of the time I re-read my posts twice before I push the submit, just to be on the safe side, that I do not un-necessary hurt someone's feelings or be dis-respectful to someone. Or breaking any forumrules for that mather. This whole forumthing, is new for me, but I compare it with some sort of 'playground', and on any playground are rules. there are buddy's and bully's(forum-members) on a playground, and a teacher/referee(fadmin-Teddy) to make sure no kids get hurt, hihihihi.Ofcourse I agree, you or anyone else should be able to post their opinion on this forum. But we are only the 'kids' and therefor someone else has the last say in if the opinion stands for everybody to read or not.Take care y'all, friendy greetings........Gilbert.

Hey gil have you taken a look at the state of the schools lately ! Not a safe place for the teachers anymore hihihihi
gilbert de jong
Yeah some schools could use a touch of paint, other should be closed because of possible collapsing roofs/walls. But at least it's not as in some schools in USA or NL, where students have to go through a metal detector.Even playgrounds are not that safe for children, but hey have you lately seen children in the western world, who are happy to play with some old bike tire and a stick rolling it up and down the street? In the western world it seems like there's a competition of getting the newest things money can buy, if you for example still playing with a PS2 instead of the PS3, man your 'not cool'. I however think every generation has had something like that.In my time it was Nike AirMax or the Levi Strauss 501, if you didn't have them, you were considered to be 'not cool'. So it's quite refreshing to see and meet people who are truly happy with what they have. I am not saying they are not trying to get a 'better' life, but they are happy where they are at.Just a couple of days ago I bought some soccer-balls for the team I am trying to learn to play Ajax-style, they went nuts. They never played with a ball that is actualy round and made from leather, hihihi. It doesn't do much for the quality of the players, since the field is full of holes, little rocks, sand etcetc...But it's good to see people happy. I am blabing on again...but most teachers, do what they can for the schools and for the students. That'[s all for now...it stopped raining outside so I am going to light up the BBQ.Take care y'all, Friendly greetings.......Gilbert.

In my time it was Nike AirMax or the Levi Strauss 501, if you didn't have them, you were considered to be 'not cool'.
Gil the schools i attended were strictly uniforms only so none of that type of stuff allowed though kids these days have so much more choice i often wonder where they find the cash  but your correct about the simple things in life are just as much fun though as for your soccer style choice try learn them to play Arsenal style that should see them run rings around those potholes  Nantiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
