We have just moved house and can not get a house phone here. I have been told to get a CDMA phone from Telkom. I have done a search but most reference to CDMA seems to relate to internet, which I already have.
Can anyone explain to me in basic terms what a CDMA phone is and how it works.
Thanks

Google cdma phones and go to wikapedia site, they have a good explanation of the fone. Wether they actualy work in Bali, dunno.

Thanks Goldminer but you over estimate my technical knowledge
My first step was Google and the Wiki page but it pretty much went over my head. I have been "sold" the idea that it is the same Telkom service (same rates / 0361 code) as a landline but just using a different method of delivery. Interested to hear from anyone actually using it as to how it really compares to a landline service.

Telkom CDMA is better known as Telkomflexi, or Telkom Flexi....
Does this ring a bell?

All I know of CDMA phones are the handphones that aren't GSM, such as flexi, that give you a landline number and landline rates on your handphone. It sounds good, but no one ever wants to call you on it, because even though it's cheap for you to call everyone else, it costs other people an arm and a leg to call you.

Hmm the owner assured me it was not Flexi!!!! Similar but not the same. He also said that the phone could only be used in the house, not out and about like flexi. Apparently he has bought me a phone in Java and has sent it to me yesterday... The whole point of having a landline was to accept calls from UK on a landline as nobody wants to call my hp. Sounds like if it is flexi it will be just as expensive if not more.
I guess I will just have to wait and see what he has sent me when it comes.

Besides Telkom Flexi and Ceria (
http://www.ceriaku.com ) there are no other CDMA networks afaik.

When in Indonesia I use a CDMA connection to my computer for the internet. It is just a USB dongle with a TelKom cards.
Why do you not use Skype for your calls. It is much cheaper than anything else even from land lines in the UK it only cost 8p a minute. Easy to set up.

The people in Uk that I keep in touch with by phone are those that dont have email or are on the net. Mostly older relatives, as well as my blind step mum. So Skype is not an option for them unfortunately.
However the owners brother is coming to set up the phone tomorrow. And I will have to pay a monthly bill. So it doesnt sound like Flexi after all. Guess I will have a better idea of exactly what it is tomorrow night.

I use Skype (connected in the local Internet Warung) to call UK land lines from Bali for the grand cost of .012 pence a minute, 10 minutes UK reasonable connection quality cost therefore 12p. Can reload it from my Paypal account - last 6 months cost me total about £10 using it about every other day to call UK, USA and Germany

Yea, your family could always ring you, and then you just return the call using Skype. That seems like the easiest and cheapest option.

Huh? Why would my family ring me first? You can simply call normal land lines using Skype from your computer just like a normal call.

I didn't mean for you, for Mimpimanis, if her family wants to talk at a certain time, they can just ring her and say call back, and then she can call their landline in the UK using skype. It would have to be cheaper than her family calling into Indonesia.

I did create a skype account at one time but when it got to setting up to buy credit for calling landlines I was stumped. I have tried setting up a Paypal account from here but it doesnt allow me to register with either of my Indonesian debit cards.
Anyway I will know more soon. As I am waiting for the brother to arrive any time now :)

Skype it is. But using a normal house style phone & with a monthly bill rather than buying pulsa. Will see how it goes.

I'm not sure why.
As far as I know, Paypal is available in Indonesia. My Indonesian wife has a Paypal account with an Indonesian debit card.
I sometimes have difficulty paying for things on-line. I have a Visa debit card and my bank is in Australia. My "address" is in Indonesia. So the radar goes up occasionally! I guess that's a good thing (security-wise).
I've always managed to resolve suspicions on the part of overseas' companies with an e-mail or two. Very suspicious companies have telephoned me to clarify my scenario.
:D

From what I have been told, and have never tried it myself, if you want to set up paypal with an Indonesian card, it should be with Indonesian Paypal.
