Advertising on this forum

When you place and ad here you are not redirected to the Bali Advertiser but to a sister website of the forum called Bali Advertising. http://www.baliadvertising.net There are new ads posted there daily. I think if those ads were allowed here, we would have a lot more one time posters placing the ads, not placing them in the correct branch/threads and the forum would become very cluttered. I am using baliadvertising myself for an ad at the moment and have no problem posting it there rather than here. :)

I have noticed a couple of posts that quickly get locked and branded as advertising. For example the one on house exchange and another on starting a furniture business. They were kind of ads but I don't think they were blatant and I think they could have made for an interesting discussion. The problem with classified site is that there is no way to talk about the ad, other than contacting the owner.

Hi all, I'd like to raise the issue of members advertising on this forum....sorry :roll: I realise this is not allowed under the rules of the forum but is it something that members would like to be able to do? I'm not actually sure as to the reasoning behind the advertsising ban. Could someone please explain it to me? Is it due to the additional administration effort that would be required if advertising was permitted or does it interfere with the forum's apparent relationship with the Bali Advertiser? I'm not looking to stir the pot but simply seeking some enlightenment. Would not a seperate thread purely for members to advertise items of either a private or maybe even a commercial nature be useful to members? Perhaps this could be avaiable to members once they have reached a particular status eg "member" or "elite" thus preventing 1 time posters advertising something and never to be heard from again. If you would not be interested in the "advertising" thread then simply don't read it or post to it. I'm pretty confident though most if not all members would regularly peruse the thread! I realise the Bali Advertiser is available for advertising but isn't this issued every 2 weeks? I'm sure some of the forum members have become friends over time and many are very helpful to each other with some of their responses. So why not allow member advertising wouldn't it be of benefit to the group? I see no problem with members giving each other the heads up on some item they intend to sell. I also don't have a problem with members promoting their own business here. I might add I don't currently live in Bali and would be unlikely to advertise anything. Therefore I have nothing to gain from my suggestion other than to see, from my perspective, an improvement to the forum for all. Any thoughts?

I read the Bali Advertiser and see it's at the bottom of the forum's home page so I guess when I've seen reference to http://www.baliadvertising.net I've mistakingly presumed they are one and the same. Obviously they're not and to be honest I never bothered to check :oops: See I've learnt something :) So Bali Advertising is a sister site of this forum and not linked to the Bali Advertiser. I presume therefore there is no automatic duplication of adverts between the 2? In regard to the 1 time posters and cluttering of threads I think my suggestions in my 1st post would minimise those issues. Anyway thanks for the reply :)

Bali Advertsing has been started to keep advertising or other "commercials" from the forum, it has no connection with any other advertising company, and is free to use. The thing is that advertising should also (a bit) effective on search engines, and you xx post suggestion would mean that the ads will not be visible in search engines. Anyway. There will be no advertising on this forum, as in posting ads. Actually I have been quite happy with this policy, although its sometimes hard to enforce, and I guess people are not always happy with it. And, its a extra work, because also the advertising needs moderation, to keep the liars, cheets and other bullshit out. But, this forum is about life on Bali, to talk about it, not to sell it. But as stated in the rules, regular contributors are allowed to advertise their own business, moderately. I even helped others to make some money, like Dr Bruce, with his e-book. I believe Roy has found a few clients for his brother in law (architect) and there has been more, probably. Talk and share about life in Bali, but leave the commercials where they belong. If you talk with your friends, you don't want people to interfere with another "type of interest" in one or another way, now do you?
