I have seen a rate sheet for tourist vs expat at a certain luxery hotel I will not mention, funny they keep both right out front on the counter!, you must prove your living status if you try to get the local rate. The rate for the local was 70% less if I remember correctly. That has to fume a few tourist? :evil:

It it the same for healthcare in many places there are 3 charge bands, local, KITAS holder and tourist. Same for many attractions. For example Bali Safari is from $25 for tourists but Rp75,000 for locals and kITAS holders. I know restaurants that have two menus, one more expensive than the other and it depends on where the guest is from or staying, as to which menu they are given. If you are staying in an expensive hotel, best not to use their transport to go out to dinner :wink:

think most little stores have double prices too. Can remember, the first time on Bali I paid 6.500 rupiah for a can of coke, thinking that's cheap, hahaha. Now at the same little toko paying the normal price of 4500. Also with other stuff like electrical wiring, lightbulbs, jewelry, there are two sets of prices or two kind of calculators :wink: friendly greetings, Gilbert.

I would not have thought that there was a tourist price for things like light bulbs as the average tourist would not be buying them or any hardware type things. I would imagine that as a Bule they just ask for a higher price and its up to you to haggle. I have travelled all over Indonesia and find that I have no problems in getting things at the right price. The secret is to know the going rates in the first place, something most tourists do not know.

i always thought that the japanese tend to get more ripped off than the aussies. perhaps because they hate to 'lose face.' they have their pride and arent ones for bargaining. i think speaking some indonesian can always help heighten the 'respect and better price' factor. i've found this usually works. or maybe i just get won over with the balinese charm when they brag to me how wonderful a young blonde bule can speak bahasa indonesia so well and act truely astonished.

Haha...yeah..I think we will never get used to this double pricing system... It is so political incorrect from the Westerner point of view. E.g. I never felt more discriminated than in Thailand because of this. But it comes with Asia, so I guess there is nothing else to do but accept. Or walk away...
