Markit,XDR-TB is already here in the US we don't have to go to some far flung corner of the earth to find it. It's popping up in homeless populations all over the country, I've also heard leprosy is making a comeback in these same populations.Don

My understanding of it, purely as a layman, is that we all have the TB bacillus in us most of the time and that our own immune system is usually well able to keep it at bay, thank Allah, God, Jehovah, Jedi, etc whoever. But in cultures (sub and normal) like AIDS sufferers and homeless in the US along with many poor countries (such as Indonesia) the state of the health system with no particular follow-up on AIDS treatments for the homeless (in the US). They go on a series of antibiotics and quit the minute the symptoms go away and not when the bug is actually destroyed. In the poor countries it's purely a matter of money - they are too poor to be treated well have a good enough diet, we are too cheap to help pay for it and hey presto it comes back to bite us all in the ass. You gotta wonder when the billions are just flowing down every canal that leads to Wall St. where was the 10 billion to defeat TB back a few years ago or for that new hospital that couldn't be afforded either:evil: ?
