I read that a new airport is confirmed for North Bali.
which will stimulate economic growth.
anyone open for discussion ?

Hi chilli..
Yeah....they have already started some time ago with "moving"(relocate) people.
I think it wont stimulate "economic" growth, it will create some jobs for building the airport.
And Airport is a too big of name, hahaha. As i know it will be a one runway for smaller planes.
I also think it will not stimulate larger numbers of tourist coming to the north...
Okidoki..friendly greetings, :) Gilbert.

i would love it if we could fly into there from sydney!! 20 minutes to get home to the village!! yippee!!! (yes i know it won't happen)

I think a 2nd airport is misconceived- especially if they mean an International airport. Airlines will not be interested unless there are big economic incentives. Most travellers will not be interested. I think if they do proceed it will be another example of wasting public funds on infrastructure that will under-used.
I think what they should do is proceed with the terminal expansions at Ngurah Rai (this is happening, we are told), and also extend the runway to accommodate the latest crop of large planes. I think this means extending the runway to the east (since extending it west would create more beach erosion problems) and make the road go under the extended runway. I have heard that Balinese don't like tunnels, so that is one possible glitch.

No worries...
No public funds are being used for the construction of the "airport". For the roads leading to it however public funds will be used.friendly greeetings....Gilbert.

It's clearly neither economically feasible nor sustainable. Presume someone has an arrangement with the construction Company?
It's not easy because Ngurah Rai needs a longer runway (I have horror stories from QF pilots) BUT, yes, extending to the West will cause problems with the beaches. Extending to the East would damage the mangrove areas (Which the Mangrove huggers don't like) but, more importantly, would involve building a tunnel under the main bypass. The problem with this, as explained to me by my Balinese friends, is that it would mean that lower caste Balinese might, if taking off or landing, be in a physical position above a higher caste Balinese. So, culturally, this is a no-no.

The proposed tunnel under the road would be for normal road traffic and not aircraft. Is that right?
Tunnel or no-tunnel, any lower caste Balinese who has ever flown anywhere before, has already committed this sacrilege. I wonder how concerned high-caste Balinese have been handling the problem of thousands of planes flying above them for years crammed with dirty socks, underpants, etc, that many travelers throw into their luggage?
The rather quaint idea some Balinese still have that laundry hanging higher than their heads is a cultural (religious?) no-no can't really be enforced. Wouldn't that mean any high-rise apartment, hotel is breaking this traditional rule?
What happened with the plan some years ago of building a new international airport somewhere near Negara (in west Bali)? Plus a new freeway from there to Denpasar? I'm no planner but that would make a little bit more sense than building one in north Bali and dealing with the bigger problem of how to move passengers quickly from there to the south (through a mountain range).

I don't know whether an airport in Singaraja would be useful...but if it means progress for my hometown...so be it. Plus it would drive land prices higher here in Buleleng :)

The Negara option , IMHO, is the better option Johnnycool. I have travelled that road, and as you said is full of trucks from the Java-Bali route.A freeway- expressway-tollroad would not only be able to service a new airport, but also a much safer and faster route for the many trucks. A similar situation arose on the Jakarta-Bandung route a few years ago, not an airport but the holding of an asean conference or some such thing  . This route is similar, many trucks etc. A toll road was built and now is much faster and safer. A problem has arisen in workmanship or construction ( tried to finish it too quick) but still much better.
The Denpasser exit -entry is a problem , as you said.

There is a small landing strip up North-west currently used by The Buleleng Flying Club (?).
I recently heard from a foreign Architect who has supposedly been employed by an international company of a project to build a large "eco-friendly" resort (?) somewhere east of Gilimanuk (on the North coastal road). It's to have its own airstrip, to shuttle guests to and from the South.
There were many discussions years ago about relocating the Ngurah-Rai International Airport because of the difficulties of extending the single runway there. The two options being considered were somewhere up North and somewhere near Negara (West Bali). Both "sites" have their problems on how to transport passengers to the major tourist enclaves in the South (Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Nusa Dua, Sanur, etc).
Building a new freeway from the North, through the mountains, would probably be more difficult (and costly) than one from the West.
On the other hand, the Western route is the main transport artery between Java and Bali. Limiting the the thousands of trucks and buses that ply that route daily could present problems, unless any new "freeway" introduced hefty toll charges. In either case, both "freeways" would have to terminate somewhere in the vicinity of the Denpasar bottleneck. Maybe flyovers would have to be built, further degrading what skyline is left. A dedicated rapid transit rail system might be possible (from the West).
I don't know what, if any, decisions have been made, to date. I doubt that a new international airport in Buleleng would be the smart way to go. I guess we'll see, sooner or later.
