I understand your frustration, Freogirl. I also think it's sad to see you go.
Maybe somebody should start a Bali expat forum with only genuine "expats" on it. I don't know if that would be good, bad or overly restrictive. [i]Might[/i] be worth a shot.
I am a genuine expat living here but I don't have the resources and time to do it myself. Anybody got some ideas?

I find it really hard to understand the interpretation of the forum administration that a copy of the advertisement for a new US Consular Agent in Bali can be constituted as being of a commercial nature and so cannot be posted on this board by a long standing member.
How is such a topic not of interest to expats living in Bali? How is it of a commercial nature? Posting did not benefit the poster in any way, and could potentially benefit the expat community in Bali.

So after 4 + years, partly as an expat, and partly as an ex-expat, I really can't continue to support this board anymore, particularly taking into account recent departures and the tone and attitude of the administration.
I hope to keep in touch with those that know me - you should all have my email, and I'm on FB if you have lost it.

It has been the policy of the previous (and current) Admin, not to allow advertisements. The moderation in this case has nothing to do with "being of a commercial nature", or if it would have benefited the poster, it has something to do with that it is an ad.
Its policy. A policy that has benefited the forum in general.
If you allow one person to place Job ads, the next surely will come, and feel rejected if he or she is NOT allowed to do the same.
Maybe an exception could have been made in this case or maybe a simple link like
http://jakarta.usembassy.gov/jobs/Bali%20Consular%20Agent,%20FZ-95%20(Jan09).htm could have been placed , if a normal and polite request would have been made, but the poster chose to be rude and threatening after the full ad was removed.

I do not beleive that the problem with this forum is the lack of expats or the non expats.
I think the problem is the tone, attitude and ugliness of some people, (expats or not).
I am not an expat, but I will be one day soon, does this mean i have to wait in the background to be able to post on this forum ?
Freogirl, i honestly hope you sleep on it and come back very soon. I am saddened also about the number of people who are leaving.
I see this forum as not going to the dogs, but as a life of its own, great for a while then it hits the wall, then bounces back, its a cycle.
Just go with the flow, post when you want to and then dont. You have a lot to contribute, dont allow the ugliness to push you away. I hope you stay.

You're missing the point. It is not the who but the what.
An admin should never change under the pressure of extortion. But I think that in this case the meaning and impact of this advertisement could be more important then applying the rules. And if the post was allowed the next point would not have been reached.

If the bloody ad was so damned important (to post here), why would anyone wait 2 weeks to post it here (or have it posted here)? Yes, the ad was two weeks old. Two whole bloody weeks old. There are plenty of other, better, places where the ad could have been posted and much more effectivly, but it wasn't.
Meaning and impact? There wasn't and there isn't any.
Ads stay of the forum, courstesy of the Administration. And if your ad is removed, and you post it childisly again and again, you make nasty remarks and start blogging about the forum and its people (after threatening you would) you are banned.
It has nothing to do with "commercialism", in whatever way.

Sure, the US government is totally depended on Roy Thompson to post an ad on this forum for it to get known to the public. Obama may request some other American now to become a member here now to take up Roy's important job. Wake up.
And besides that, Roy has asked me before to post "Messages" on the forum while he couldn't, because he considered it important.
Can we move on? He posted an ad, it was not allowed and he started to misbehave, and was subsequently banned.

Being busy buying and building in Bali at the moment I've just caught up with this series of strings and I have to say I find it hilarious :lol:
Roy has always thought of this as "his" forum, bout time he learned it aint and that his idiotic referral to his 500000 posts doesn't make a big deal, most of those were attacks on other members (myself included, so, yes I just may not be objective, should I start my own blog? :lol: )
The article in question is superfluous since most Americans can't find Bali or Indonesia on a map so those that manage to find there way here generally know where the embassy is and who to contact. If they don't, then tough shite maybe they out to go back to "God's Own Country" oh, and take an Australian under each arm.
All those sanctified members that are leaving the forum - most of them thought it was their forum too so as they say in Texas "don't let the door hit you in the ass as you leave" :wink:

A while a go, Bert thought it’s a good idea to close this forum and so he did, that time I wrote him an email to explain that this forum is not his private procession and cannot be treated like this, even though he started it and owns it.
I know that this forum provided Bert a lot of problems in the past and some incidents directly or indirectly caused by members on that forum or from that forum have been reasonable for some headaches and more, so I understand his longing for some peace, also under consideration of the current family situation.
I’m not very pleased that Bert decided to hand over the forum administration to an unknown newbie, although I understand the reasons for this decision.
This fadmin (whoever he or she will be) is right now stumbling into another forum disaster and he or she isn’t aware of this, simply due to lack of knowledge about the members of this forum and the culture of this forum, we had this already in the past and this forum survived it, but the people responsible for this similar movement did not.
I have seen a lot of balilifes or Markits coming and going here and doubtless there will be more.
It was laughable to nuke Roy’s announcement by pointing on the forum rules and his childish reaction was predictable, but was it an undesired escalation of the situation or was the unrestrained and easily calculable Mr. T going straight into the trap?
It’s not a secret on this board, that I mostly get a kind of an allergic reaction when I see these green letters in postings and it seems that in almost every thread this green shows up now.
I don’t know, though I would be interested, what motivation somebody has to become an admin of a board, where there is no relation to the expected content nor to the members of the forum, it wouldn’t come to my mind to be a moderator of a crochet forum since I don’t know anything about this?
