I use Mentari for calling UK, dont know the actual rate but I get a lot longer to a UK landline for my rupiah than I do to an Indonesian HP.

You should check the rates to the country you are calling first, I can only vouch for XL which was great for Australia (now not so!) but is still good for 10 countries, cant remember them all but included US and UK amongst others.
ilc, has something changed with XL? Is it no longer possible to call Australia with 01000 prefix?
ilc
This isnt for all countries so make sure you do some research for the countries you want to call. But you can get some really cheap international calls from most providers by dialling a 'special' prefix number before the international code. These are cheap as most use VOip technology I believe:
XL: 01000 + country code + area code + number
Simpati: 01017 + country code + area code + number
Indosat (IM3, Mentari, Matrix etc.): 01016 + Country code + area code + number
Esia = 01010 + country code + area code + number
Fren : 01068 + country code + area code + number
SMART : 01033 + country code + area code + number
3: 01089 + country code + area code + number
You should check the rates to the country you are calling first, I can only vouch for XL which was great for Australia (now not so!) but is still good for 10 countries, cant remember them all but included US and UK amongst others.

Skype beats them all with lower rates and much better voice quality...

I looked at Skype but to call landlines rather than another computer you had to set up an account for credits and use a credit card to pay for them, which I dont have.

Could you not get one Mimpi either from your accounts here or from your account in the UK presuming you still have one there. Fairly easy to get and Skype is the way to go as it is far cheaper than any phone company.
You can also pay by paypal and just transfer the money rather than a credit card. Takes a bit longer but can be done.

I have no idea if a foreigner can get a credit card in Indonesia. Not sure that i would really want one either. And it's hard enough to get a bank account in UK never mind applying for a credit card from outside the country.
I pay so little for my international calls with Mentari, that i dont really feel the need. As I said a call to Uk costs less than calling Made in Lombok on a different network!

I wish you hadn't told me that Bert because now I am wondering if I should get one :?

The 01000 number still works for calling Australia - it is more expensive now though. The rates (for Australia) went up significantly in November 2008 though.
I would use skype but dont have broadband.

Thanks ilc. I called Sydney yesterday, rates are now Rp3000 per minute using 01000 prefix. Rp7000/minute using "+" :(
