Internet Advice

Hi, we are moving to Bali in January for a while and renting a house in Ubud. Previously, my only experience in Bali has been as a tourist, so I am a little clueless when it comes to some things. The one problem we are having is trying to figure out what internet is available. the house we are renting does not have internet access. Is it difficult to have it connected? If so, what other options are there? Can we use it with a mobile phone? Or wireless? Thank you for your help.

Thanks for the help, but the house doesn't have a phone line. Can you please explain what our other options are? I'm not very technically minded so the simplest terms possible! :( We have laptops with in built wireless modems... Thank you!

Or wireless?...[/quote] If your house has a telephone line and depending where you are in Ubud, you can probably get [i]TelkomSpeedy[/i] without too much hassle. That's an ADSL connection. You'll need to buy an ADSL modem/router. They cost anywhere between [i]Rp[/i] 500,000 - 1,000,000. Don't quote me on this but I think a new [i]Speedy[/i] account costs about [i]Rp[/i] 75,000 to register. Then it's a matter of choosing which monthly "package" you want. There are three main ones that I know of: (Note that they are all [i]supposed[/i] to be [i]up to[/i] 1Mb/s download and 128 Kb/s upload.) 1 GB/month...[i]Rp[/i] 200,000 3 GB/month...[i]Rp[/i] 400,000 Unlimited..... [i]Rp[/i] 700,000 (plus 10% tax). [i]Indosat's IM3[/i] pre-paid phone-cards currently work out to about [i]Rp[/i] 500/hour for internet access. I'm not sure if they work in Ubud. I'm pretty sure that there are also wireless options in Ubud, but don't know the details. My point is that you [i]should[/i] find several internet connection options in Ubud. Hope this helps. :D

How difficult that would be depends on where the house is. If it's a long way from anywhere, ADSL might not be available. Your laptop with a built-in wireless modem [i]might[/i] also not work properly, depending how far your house is from the nearest wireless tower. If you know somebody in the vicinity of your proposed house, I'd ask them to do a check and see what works, and what doesn't. In any case, there are many wi-fi hotspots in Ubud. In the worst case scenario, you [i]might[/i] have to use them. :D

Globalxtreme (http://www.globalxtreme.net) have just opened in Ubud. They put up a tower and you link to a wireless transmitter. Setup is Rp2m I think and (and I hope I'm not going to jinx this) they have recently gone from being very patchy to very reliable. Maybe because if I goes off I ring and yell! We have a wifi router in the house and run 2 laptops and 2 pcs off it, often at the same time and it's ok. Its 512kbs (shared) and we pay Rp1.1m per month flat fee.
