Thanks for sharing your experience Hans. I couldn't get a phone line at my last house, so I signed up with Spicelink. Service is not great, but I suppose better than nothing. They often have problems with their proxy server and Google of all sites doesn't work. When I call the support line, they try to tell me it is Google who is having the problem.:icon_rolleyes:

I've heard from a lot of people who are unsatisfied with Spice Link - especially recently... Three friends of mine could access the internet only about 10 days of the last month. They hardly had any problems before with spice link.
The support kept telling them that it was their fault, even though they hadn't changed anything.
When they came to check the antenna and stuff, they told them that the bamboo wall between the antenna and the router would disturb the signal... and loads of other funny things.
They just don't want to admit that they are having problems at the moment. It's ridiculous...
My guess is, that they have just too many customers and their bandwidth can't handle them anymore, but they don't want to spend more money.
haha... google has problems, ofc ;-)
greetings hans.

hey Hans, I am looking to have move to Bali in May but I really do need internet that has a speed of approx 1mb. It sounds as though you have this.
Can I ask, if you were loading a page, what is the average time you have to wait for it?
I won't be using it for any downloading, mainly browsing of websites,
Thanks

Hi Effie.
Sorry for my late reply, I'm very busy at the moment...
As I said, my internet here is quite fast. It is in fact 1 Mbps.
How long it takes to open a page depends on the distance to the server the homepage is hosted on, not solely on your connection speed. (of course there are many other factors as well...)
I can only talk about my area though.
For instance Google comes up almost instantly, but don't expect speeds like in Europe, or the US.

Yes, it's interesting. Sometimes people speak as if with technical knowledge - and it's nonsense. I have come across this with technicians associated with Internet provision. But at other times you come across people with an awesome grasp of technical info - some people in Rimo Centre come to mind.

oh yeah I wanted to say something else about Speedy and the Telkom, just to warn you...
Recently my modem was broken and I had to replace it (lightning - no earth wire...:icon_rolleyes:)
I went straight to the Telkom office in Singaraja and asked them if they can sell me a new modem.
They said yes it costs 250.000 RP, but they recommend buying a different modem (the friendly woman gave me the address of a shop) because the standard modem was supposedly slow and getting very hot (which isn't true - there is nothing wrong with the standard modem).
Ok, so I went to that shop and the "expert" explained to me the standard Telkom modem has a "bad signal" or something like "the signal is not strong" (which is nonsense...) and the Internet would be very slow if I had that one (remark: it was quite fast when I had it).
So the guy wanted to sell me a D-Link ADSL Router (I'm not a big fan of D-Link products) - 450.000RP.
Then I saw that he also had the same model in his shop, the one Telkom was selling (which a new customer wouldn't know because you don't get to see the modem before they recommend you to buy one at that other shop...). Price: 350.000RP (100.000 more than at the Telkom!).
So I eventually bought the cheap one at the Telkom (the young lady there was looking a little odd now).
To cut it short:
If you ever consider purchasing one of the Telkom Speedy packages near Singaraja, get the cheap modem and don't go to that computer shop they recommend (The Telkom office staff seems to have some agreement with that shop...).
If anybody is interested:
Currently the Telkom sells TP-LINK TD-8817 modems with their Speedy Products. They are about the same as the ones they had before (Corega or something) - even the interface is the same.
regards,
hans

If anyone is looking for a cheaper option but is a little slower while still fast enough to not make you want to kill yourself then go for Smart. I'm usually up in Singaraga every weekend and it works great, even better than here in Renon.
hans121
hi BKT.
How does "Smart" work? Is it prepaid? How do you pay?
Do you know how fast it actually is (by the way - which package do you have?).
Do you get a modem / how much does it cost?
greetings hans

Hey Sorry about the late response Hans, I didn't see your message,
Smart is pre-paid, you can top it up at most pulsa shops. monthly cost is 150.000rp and the Modem (stick) will set you back around 1 millz. I'm not sure how fast it is per MB. You can get a technician out to your house who will test it out for you so if you don't have buy it if its too slow.
If you buy credit for it make sure you buy the exact amount for the plan because once your plan finishes it will eat into any credit you have left. It doesn't send you a message telling you either, I had 270.000 Rp on my number and that only lasted 2 days after my plan was over :icon_evil: . Not impressed at all
