Hello Gina,I think at some stage that I have encountered many of these symptoms. As I am what's known in Oz as a 'roo dog', i.e. skinny but fit, my problem is that I lose my appetite. Which, for a skinny fellow is not healthy, it usually is accompanied by lethargy as well, due to lack of intake. I was wondering if you knew of a natural appetite stimulant, and even a supplement that would assist weight gain. thanks.
Thorsten
Sorry to say this, but I wouldn't recommend local food stalls, carts to newbies in Bali!It is not so funny to read your book for three days and nights on the edge of the bathtub, when you don't dare to move further than 3 metres from the toilet bowl and I speak with some experience in this case.Don't get me wrong, you will find great local food in excellent quality, fresh, tasty and well prepared in local warungs for ridiculous prices, but you have to know where and also when, and you need somebody to lead you or point you there. For a Westerner - most will have to deal with a kind of climate shock, then the difference of time, humidity, sweating and due to this a lack of minerals, vitamins, liquidity and when your stomach and guts are not steeled by tons of chillies, then a cold sate stick already a few hours old will get you in serious troubles very soon. But also in typical tourist restaurants you can easily catch your "Bali belly" - my advice, stay away from these all-you-can-eat lunch or evening buffets!Best regardsThorsten

I know exactly what you mean Thorsten,I've resolved to the fact that I'm going to lose my appetite for the first three days due to climate shock, as you mentioned. After that if I don't get sick it's a surprise.Every dry fart is a trophy! :D

Dear MilageYou are one of the lucky one's to have this problem,Its normally the opposite. Most likely its the high calorie foods that make you gain weight, red meats eaten often will slow down your digestion causing the calories to pack on.People with slow ellimination, slow metabolism gain the most weight. For the rest of you regards this loose bowel caused by faulty foods, the easiest thing is to always carry 'charcoal tablets' with you. These detox any food toxin you might of eaten within 10-15 min. When nothing else works -charcoal tablets always works(made from compressed coconutwoodmade into charcoal)No side effects.

You are one of the lucky one's to have this problem,Its normally the opposite.[/quote]Hi Gina,You don't know how often I'm told this, but let me assure you that when you are ill and thinning with your ribs showing, because the thought of food will make you puke, it can get pretty scary. I don't have the fat reserves of most to draw on at these times. I have an extremely high metabolic rate, and usually eat like a horse. If that urge to eat goes, there's problems. So, do you know of a supplement that increases appetite? I've heard a rumor that taking vitamin C before eating red meat will help 'stick' proteins to your bones. Can you confirm this? I generally drop 5 kilograms on an average Bali trip, this takes up to 6 weeks for me to regain when I get home. It's not a matter of just sitting around and eating donuts either, that will only collect at my waist and neck, I've tried this, It's not pretty. Lifting weights helps, but I generally just get toned rather than get the desired bulk or healthy mass. :|

Taking Vit C will give you runnystools if you take to many mlg. thus aggravating your problem.I suppose a low dose should be a good try 500mlg daily. But I have not heard of this theory your referring to.The answer might be more complex than you might think,With most eating disorders there are psycosomatic symptoms aswell.Best way to handle this properly would be to make an appt with an Classical homeopath/MD,you are located in Perth here is a referral; Dr. Philip M.Bailey (Perth)

psychosomatic? The majority of my dad's side of the family is the same. 'Roo dog' looking, due to high metabolism. They just look heavier because they all have big beer guts, and I don't drink alcohol often. My weight loss is due to sudden change in climate and diet and also the odd bout of Bali belly. So you recommend therapy for this?Right-e-o. :|
Roy
My suggestion, after your arrival, would be a late lunch/early dinner at Naughty Nuri's every day for your first two weeks. The menu would be at least 4 draft beers, a rare steak and mashed potatoes with heaps of gravy. You'll never see your own ribs ever again. For that matter, while looking downwards, you might also not spot the family jewels, depending on their carat weight, BUT, you won't be wearing a toilet seat as a halo either! :P
