Hi, wondering if anyone is able to help - I am looking to either hire music equipment for a band to play for a private party in bali or if this is not possible, am looking for a band to play that owns it own equipment ... any suggestions??

Probably the best way to do this is to visit a few places where local bands are playing.
If in Kuta/Legian/ Seminyak try JP's Warung, Obsessions, Jaya, Santa Fe, Bali Rock, Legends.
Most of the musicians who play these venues are available for hire.

The yellow band playes at Legends and Garden view very often so go and catch up and Im sure they will help you out

Sanurian is your best bet here as he plays from time to time with local bands I believe.

Bolli's suggestion is the "spot on" way to go. There are many bands in Bali, and with various styles and level of talent.

Yes, one way is to go somewhere a band is playing. Ask the band (if you like them).
Another would be to go to a retail musical equipment outlet. Some of them rent gear to bands.
There are several "outlets" where local musicians buy their stuff, be it new sets of strings, effects pedals, drum sticks, new speakers, etc. One of the biggest is Tom's Music on the Ngurah Rai By-Pass, near Kuta. (I'm not saying they're "the best".) There are others, smaller but maybe busier. Talk to any of the staff or put up an ad in their shop. I doubt if you'll have to wait very long for a response.
I personally know a couple of the harder-to-find ones (in Denpasar). Feel free to PM me if you want their addresses.

Speak to Ari at the Twice Bar in Poppies 2. He uses his venue for local bands to get experience playing in front of an audience.
Sure they're mostly from Bali's subculture ie punk but I went there one night and there was a band called The Hydrants and they were great musicians. They played energetic rockerbilly and the lead singer (Marcello the lifesaver) really plays up to an audience.
Great band, excellent musicians (especially the lead guitarist) and sure to get a party going.
