It might be an attempt to address the often hideous traffic problems there. Whether it works, or not, remains to be seen.
There was talk a while ago about a plan to build a mono-rail system around there. Don't laugh, but one of the theories was that tourists would be able to see the "real beauty" of Kuta/Legian from on high. And of course, as a direct result, "normal traffic" would significantly decrease. Obviously, those promoters are would-be geniuses.
Maybe the "mono-rail plan" is about to happen. Wouldn't surprise me one bit.

They gotta do "something" about the horrendous traffic there....maybe a free shuttle every 15 minutes around there might help...and just close the damn street to motor vehicles.

As someone who regularly uses, and parks along, Jl Legian in Kuta it came as quite a shock that suddenly no one is allowed to park along this stretch of road.
The theory, I'm told, is that this plan will assist traffic flow by allowing up to two lanes of vehicles to pass along the road, but weall know what happens when more than a single lane of traffic forms on Bali's roads... don't we?
I have seen, hundreds of times now, people forming two lanes along Imam Bonjol on the way into Denpasar only to slow the traffic even more because, at several stages, they have to merge back to a single lane i.e traffic lights. When this happens, half of the traffic is in the wrong lane and so chaos ensues.
I can see now that precisely the same thing will happen approaching Bemo Corner when, all of a sudden, those in the left lane want to turn onto Jl Pantai and vice versa.
Meanwhile many people can't park close to their intended destinations or places of work.
Any comments from the 'Pod' Gang here?

By closing it off to traffic it simply shifts the problem elsewhere and how would deliveries etc. get to the many traders and businessses there?.
My theory is that traffic will not improve because of this measure. Most traffic jams are generated by certain bottlenecks there such as Poppies 2 where traffic merges (this would be a better street to pedestrianise) and Bemo Corner where traffic merges to go to the beach. Traffic lights here would also be a better solution.
The monorail sounds just a little too ambitious for Bali - look at the many years they've been playing with that in Jakarta.

You're probably right, balijohn

The proposal may have come from the same people in Jakarta.
I mentioned this, sort of tongue-in-cheek, years ago. Definitely not an easy thing to do but perhaps more sensible, in the long run. A small underground rail system.

I just thought of a name for it.
BUS
Bali Underground System

BUS is a good name although it might also stand for Behind Usual Schedule:
The logistics for this would, I'm sure, create chaos in Kuta for years. It took over 8 months for them to simply put new drainage pipes in a few years back and still the road is a mess. A project of this scale would be a nightmare.
Back to the no parking and already the negative impact on shops and restaurants is being felt. I have spoken to several traders including the big names and turnover has dropped over the last few days. (Traffic still crawling at night though).

Kuta's had chaos for years all ready.
So, what would be new about that?

although one must note that few of the currently installed traffic lights anywhere on the island are either maintained or work properly. Why no-one is able to change bulbs is beyond me.
