Roy
Gee Markit, I could think that you have at least partially plagiarized my column published in The Bali Times, February 22 edition, and available here:
You write in your post,
“I view this as a Work In Progress...”
My advice is to save yourself a whole lot of time...take a good look in the mirror, and really figure out just who YOU are writing about.
And, by the way, just where on earth where you an expat for over thirty years? I'll need your real name too if you don't mind, just to verify. Will that be a problem, or do you prefer to hide behind a cartoon character and with a fictitious name?

Please look at the "rules" Roy. People are allowed to remain anonymous if they want, and questioning, guessing, or exposing identities is a nono too.
If someone wants to share their real identity, please by PM.

Sure, OK if you can give me one good reason to, I will. But at least write something that is worth reading - 2 word submissions are boring, cowardly and, worst of all, not funny. Add to the whole, if you don't like what I write, good, tell me!
Sniping from the sidelines shows lack of interest and commitment. Weigh in to the argument, hell, we've got people here that can hardly write English spending hours constructing paragraphs of type just to bitch at me (and others too, I hasten to add).
So your two word submission gets the grade: Could do better.

Fluently German?
Well this can be easily tested – I’m all your’s, so let’s see if you are able to cope with Kadek’s German and if we are back to your I’ll put my money where my mouth is statement!

You never miss a chance to embarrass yourself –eh?
From one sentence I can tell you Kadek’s German is better than your’s!
So what’s now Markit – Espaniol?

That's latin...(colpa mia in Italian), but anyway, it's not a matter that it's your fault.
But as a newcomer reading on some posts, I did notice that you don't seem to like Roy very much. And Nakal is right about that.
And I must admit that Roy writes like a true pro which I admire but at the same time intimidates me a bit as I prefer to chat in a true sense of the word. :)
Oh well, correction: I'm not an expat per se but an Italian expat's wife.
Lighten up, guys!

The Expat as Subspecies by Markit
In over 30 years of ex-patriot life lived in several different countries around the world, sometimes more than once, I have met and learned to appreciate the subspecies Expat . I would like to share my, admittedly subjective, evaluation of the species and its main subgroups. The types listed here can be combined in any number of variations that are equally entertaining. I welcome your comments – lol!
Type 1) Forced out of home country by job or career necessity – to be pitied and bought lashings of local brew to which the type 1 is addicted due to its strength and cheapness, his motto “Drinking that stuff isn’t really drinking – so I’m not a drunk”. Beware of asking any advice from a type 1 as he will know only his hotel and local bar but to keep you talking to him will make up anything. Usually American.
Type2) This example is the other extreme from the type 1 as this subspecies has immersed himself so completely in the foreign culture that he hardly appears as human. If you hear of some way-out religious sect or martial arts group, for instance living entirely on bananas worshiping a small, fat Indian boy then you will generally find this type praying at his feet or alternatively living alone in a tree in the jungle (back to nature). Usually French.
Type3) Now your type 3 is probably the most dangerous as they appear for all intents and purposes to be rational members of the species. Don’t be fooled! These examples have generally left their home countries because no one can stand them there and come to the country (developing/3rd world), where they are presently active, usually on holiday and stayed. Swayed by the usual adulation shown by the natives for “the great white hunter” (actually his money) into believing that he really was a helluva guy, and that those folks at home just didn’t understand him, into taking up residence. Your type 3 takes on the local culture and particularly its religious minutiae in an almost Autistic fashion, able to quote cultural details long after his audience has decided that suicide would be a better choice and has started to look for sharp objects or a cliff to jump off of. Your only protection from this subspecies is, as with type 1, to buy him copious amounts of the local brew, professing to love the religious and political implications of its harvest/brewing/blessing/etc., in the hope that the type3 will try and drink it all himself – usually American, but Germans have been sighted.
Type4) This example is by far the least harmful and may even become quite tame upon repeated exposure as they are mostly sighted in developed countries and are usually gainfully employed in some minor capacity which does not require any communication skills. The reason for this is plainly due to the character of the type4 as this subspecies has usually spent such a long time in their country of choice that he has forgotten his mother tongue almost completely but, being of limited intelligence, has found it impossible to learn the language of his guest country. The sad outcome of this is that your type4 speaks no known human language and is forced to communicate in platitudes and homilies. Such as when asked the directions to the local castle “Ooh, eye, by gum”, patently of no help when the said castle is 10 miles around the next mountain. Equally divided between the English and Germans but Americans have been sighted.
I view this as a Work In Progress and have only published it here to save some of you unwary travelers from becoming unwittingly ensnared. I welcome any additions to the list and hope you are able to recognize the members of this forum that are mentioned here - they won’t recognize themselves!
Enjoy and beware.

No mention was made of post count, just word count. :)

I'm clueless!
Markit
See Nakals post. Clueless but happy in Italy...maybe in my next life I can be born Italian. Good food, beautiful women, good food, nice weather, good food, great fashions and the afternoon nap is an institution under government protection. Oh, and a lovely language too.
Markit
Thorsten get a sense of humour transplant for Christ's sake. You carry on being so f*cking Germanic and you'll give the whole country a bad name for humor :D :D :D
Thorsten
I’m rather f*cking Germanic (from which you are so clueless like everything else you dribble here) than like you Markit and no, not every clown is also funny! 8)

Markit,
This statement is highly unfair!
There are many people here in this forum who are not native English speakers since we are from many different countries. Even native English speakers are not all perfect in their own language!! Speaking it, let alone writing a constructive argument.
Do you by any chance speak a language other than English fluently :?:
Since you are going to Bali in April (is it right?). How about you show some courtesy to the local people and learn Indonesian or Balinese. That way you will not be offended when the waitress/waiter serving you in a restaurant is not speaking perfect English since you will be able to order in the local language!
Oh selelum lupa, being able to say 'satu bingtang lagi' is not considered good either.

I guess I'd categorize myself in type 4 - an Indonesian expat who lives in Italy and countries such as England, US, Thailand, S.Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, S.Arabia.
However, as far as I remember, I find the British are friendly, open and fair people. Are you British or an immigrant.
You sound more like many Italians I know here who are cynicals, angry and negative most of the time (it's their culture which can be very endearing at times but frustrating at others). Not to bash any Italians here. It is just based on my personal experience in this country which saddens me everytime I meet or socialise with such.
That's why I come to this website to get the glimpse of I suppose to be a happy website where most members either live in this so-called paradise or at least have or will live there one day that should project a happy and peaceful people. Am I too zen?
Please don't be an angry person. You don't seem to adhere to the motto accompanied in your avatar.
Cheers!!
Markit
Mea Culpa - my bad, it's my fault, I'm sorry, I'll never do it again, etc. etc.
Kadek-my point was lost somewhere and it's undoubtedly my lack of understanding, yes really, sorry.
Now what I meant to say was that there are people out there who submit to this forum that don't speak or write English very well and that these people make the great effort to write long essays in a language that is foreign to them so that others of us around that world will understand their points of view.
Now this person that I was replying to only thought it sufficient to reply with his or her point of view with 2 words. My stand was that if you believe in something strongly enough to bother to reply at all then make your reply worth reading by voicing a real opinion - I personally don't find "Grow up" much to get a hold on or reply to. I would not have replied at all but there are quite a number of people that submit in the same way.
To answer your question Kadek I also speak/read/write fluent German and some Spanish but will be brushing up on my Indonesian, or at least trying to learn the basics when there - I've never been able to learn languages from books or videos/recordings - to get the rhythm I need to use and hear it continuously.
To all others that I've offended - tough! Get a life.

Well to be honest, the whole going on between you and Roy isn't the most mature thing going on right? Bitching at each other as much as possible and, whenever there is an option, try to make the other one look like a fool? So if you don't understand the words grow up after I quoted your pwnage, I'll just say it like you probably need to hear it. I don't like it and your behaving like a child at certain times here on this forum.
Please explain to me why it shows lack of interest and commitment because my post count is lower than yours? Yes I can easily get a higher post count if I start writing b/s all the time as well and get myself into meaningless discussions/arguments but what's the point of that?
You just keep posting your 100% usefull interesting and meaningful stories and I'll watch from the sideline ok?
