Hi David, and welcome to the forum. One thing I would suggest once you are in Bali is to visit with Russell at the Fly Café in Ubud...just a little north of the Neka Museum on the left side of the road while heading north out of central Ubud.
Russell is an Australian, married to a Balinese and with two children from that marriage. He has been here for about 14 years and has both a restaurant (Fly Café) and a gallery, (Krane Gallery). He is very open and free with his advice, and his insights about opening either sort of business should prove to be very useful to you.
Cheers and good luck with your move!

Hi Trittydog - a big question - we moved 15 months ago. The house was already being built so many decisions had been made. The move consisted of quitting work, closing un-needed accounts etc, selling ou car, furniture etc, arranging rental of Aussie house, getting visa stuff done, arranging for transport of personal effects in about 40 cartons, arranging for transport of dog (rabies vaccination, health check, agent at sending end, agent at Bali end), and getting ourselves onto the plane. At the Bali end, the first few days were to collect person effects and dog, then get to the temporary rented house, then start gettling into issues connected with the unfinished house and garden.
What would we different? We would have started selling furniture etc sooner using eBay - we could have got more money, and given away less. We would have bundled more stuff into the personal effects cartons at the last minute to make sure we were not carrying excess baggage - the charges were outrageous. We would have taken more care selecting the agent for receiving our dog in Bali - the one we used charged too much - but we only really got a good idea of what would have been a reasonable fee later.
A bigger question we wonder about is whether we would have been better off extending the temporary rental accommodation from a few months to a year or more so that we could make all the decisions about what and where to build and how to furnish after we were really living here. The advantage would be that with more time you would choose many things a bit different and almost certainly get better value for money. The disadvantage would be living without a real base for so long - could we have survived that - we don't know, but I think for us it was better to bite the bullet and get established more quickly.
However, since you are looking for business opportunities, I think you have more to gain by getting here on a long-term basis before you try and decide what business and where.
