Can anybody kindly update me on the current possibilities for mobile broadband connection through a laptop with a package (using a USB modem) from a local telecomms company?
I've searched all the threads on this topic in the forum but cannot get an up-to-date overview -- although I've seen lots of good info and advice.
I'm expecting shortly to be moving from Thailand to Bali (Seminyak/Kuta area probably) and will initially be in temporary accommodation (possibly moving several times) before I get a definite home, so a portable conection would be extremely important for me initially.
In Thailand we have several services available, ranging from CDMA with one telcoms co (costing about US$ 330 for the modem and then US$ 25 a month for unlimited accesss) to older technologies (such as GPSR) withother operators working along the same lines but at lower modem cost and lower monthly charges.
Any info or thoughts about Bali would be appreciated.

Hi, flier
Most decent laptops these days have a built-in wireless modem.
In the short term, you can buy pre-paid cards from various companies here and use their wireless hot-spots with your laptop.
Examples: GlobalXTreme, Telkom, etc.
The more time you buy on a card, the cheaper it is. Can be as little as Rp 6,000/hour, or less.
Potential Hot-spot 'Problems':
You could find yourself in an expensive hotel's lobby where drinks are expensive. You might even have to listen to a lousy band that happens to be playing while you're there.
I know of and occasionally use D'Corner (in Sanur). The connection is through GlobalXTreme. Usually 'good' (enough). I think their connection is 512kbs coming down.
Sorry - I can't help you with prices of mobile packages, as I don't use them.

Hi,
Yes there are 3G services in Bali. Most providers I think offer it, at sort of the same prices as in Thailand...
Have to buy a modem etc....
You could go to the RIMO Mall (Denpasar) 2nd floor, Arbell computers, and ask for the possibilities....

I was on IM2 with Indosat. They were pretty good. I had to buy a modem and a SIM. I could pick up the signal in Nusa Dua, Kuta, the airport. It has pretty good coverage but I cant get it here in Jimbaran so have changed.
I was on the lowest use package which was about Rp40,000 for 20 hours and about Rp10,000 per hour after that. They have other packages at a higher monthly rate but less per hour. Once when it was down they gave me a dial up login and I still use that from time to time in Jimbaran on the same account.
Their offices are on the Bypass in Tuban.

Many thanks to all for these three replies, which have reassured me. It was fantastic to get such quick responses just a few hours after I posted the question.

I wouldn't be too reassured. Nothing written in this thread has actually confirmed that it's possible to get unlimited 3G/HSDPA. Can anyone say for certain that it's possible?
I'm in Bali for a couple months, and really need a good mobile connection, as I'm about to start part time university studies over the internet. So far I haven't heard of such a connection. I'm starting to worry that I might have to leave Bali!
