I can't recall ever seeing a speed limit sign in Bali or Lombok  So what is the speed limit??
And I totally agree - speed cameras would be an expensive waste of time. The only reason they are soooooo financially successful in Australia is because most of us are good little vegemites and drive registered vehicles and have valid driving licenses. And we get mail. Can you imagine trying to mail a speeding fine to a Balinese? LOL.

Sheesh - what a rigmarole! Mats you are just going to have to come to Perth!!

I think the maximum speed limit in Indonesia is 60 KMH. Yes, we can all laugh about that.
There are some signs on the Ngurah-Rai By-Pass that suggest 30 KMH.
That's on a road that looks like a freeway.
Maybe the locals think, like me, if it looks like a "freeway", it must be one.
I have yet to be pulled over for "speeding".
If you have an overloaded truck or tourist bus coming from behind you at 100+ KMH, it's sensible to move out of their way.
If you're unlucky, you wind up behind a police car crawling like a snail.
At least you're still alive.
I have never seen anybody observing this (me included).
Apart from the occasional police vehicle - everybody just passes them at whatever speed they want (or can achieve).
Maybe the police are trying to save petrol, or something like that.
Beats me.
Mats, next time you are in Australia I definately recommend you get your motorbike license here, then get the one year international translation for about $20.

Freo, in New South Wales it's not so easy to get a licence. To obtain a motorbike licence, it's compulsory to first attend a riding-training weekend course and also complete an on-line exam.
After completing the weekend course, a learner's permit is issued which must be held for a minimum of 12 months before it's possible to sit the test for a full licence. The full licence test must also be performed on a motorbike owned personally by the rider.
I have completed the weekend course previously and held a learner's permit for quite some time but I didn't get around to sitting for the full licence. When my car licence expired, my learner's permit also expired, so now I have to start the process all over again.

You can think what you like, but I haven't had a driving license in over 6 years. I used to go through the get an agent every year and pay the 300,000 for each then I started using the tourist and multiple enrty visas so I couldn't go that route anymore. Now I just carry an old license with me and show that. I haven't been pulled over in 3-4 years but the last time I was, I showed the old license and gave the policeman 50,000. Cheaper than buying one every year.
I might add that I have a job where I leave the country every month (never stay longer than 30 days) so I don't need the other visas. And I am lucky enough to have found a Balinese wife who smooths things along if I am stopped. By the way the last time I was stopped was in Singaraja going toward Lovina where there is the weird roundabout.

To continue my story: I went the wrong way around this weird roundabout and there is a police stand right there waiting for someone to do this. I was pulled over and my wife told them she had been driving but go tired so her husband had taken over. She gave them her license and paid 50,000 and we went on our way with me still driving. It was her first driving license and it was still new so she got a kick out of showing it to them. That's one of the things I love about her, how little things like that make her day.
In Bali, if you are willing to take a few risks, things can be taken care of. And another thing, when I drove my car that still had the "B" license from Jakarta on it, I was pulled over all the time. 3 times in one day, in fact. Back then I needed to have a legal license. Now that the bikes and the car have the local "DK" it has been at least 5 years since I was pulled over by the tourist police just to look at my car (they said it was for my protection).

I've heard many stories like yours in the past. I think you've been very lucky, so far. What happens when/if you kill someone in an accident, even if it's not your fault? Maybe you're injured, too. Paying the police ten bucks won't get you out of it, and I bet your insurance cover (if you have any), won't be impressed either.
...In Bali, if you are willing to take a few risks, things can be taken care of...
Sure - up to a point. What that "point" is depends on three things:
1. The severity of "the problem"
2. How rich you really are
3. How much you delude yourself, in the first place
Ever heard of morals and social responsibility?
It's like this - I can go down to a well-known cafe/bar in Sanur and buy myself a fake International Driver's Permit any day of the week. It looks real, apart from a few spelling mistakes here and there. I could probably do a better job myself on my own computer. A lot of explaining to do if I'm involved in a serious accident.
I, for one, am not convinced that the aggravation that can result is worth saving a few bucks. You're also lucky you haven't been stopped for licence and registration checks more often. My car has DK (Denpasar) number plates. I've been "checked" three times already this month.
To perpetrate that idea that all police in Indonesia can be easily bought-off, every time, is WRONG.
