Is your version of ACDSee a legal, bought copy? If not, that might explain this behaviour.
On the other hand, I've been using this programme since version 4 and have noticed, with some later versions, increased start-up times and occasional crashes. I think my favourite version is v.6 Powerpack. Having said that, when it does spit the dummy, restarting it seems to make everything OK (at least until the next time).

It's not a bought copy, but I seem to be faster than the application at times and then it crashes occasionally. It's not a real problem, I am just unpatient when it comes to computers, that's why I like the newest and fastest ones only.

Just thought I'd add this regarding "the computer college" with the fairly fast, open-to-the-public internet connection in Sanur.
I had occasion to actually try this place out yesterday. I downloaded a 94MB file which took about 30 minutes. I burned the file to a CD-ROM. The total price was Rp 15,000 (which I regard as extremely cheap around these parts). It's owned and run by Koreans. If your Bahasa Korean is not up to scratch, you have to spend a couple of minutes with the staff to turn the English language on.
And contrary to what I posted before, they only charge Rp 10,000/hour! Get in quick because I don't know how they can afford to charge so little compared with "typical broadband" internet cafes around Sanur. A great bargain, if you ask me...
It's exact name and location are as follows:
Bali Teknologi Informasi Computer College
Jalan By-Pass Ngurah Rai No. 500
Sanur Kauh
Tel: (0361) 284-362
Oh, and before someone jumps on me about downloading a 94MB file in 30 minutes does not equate to 1,536 kbs...that's right. That's got nothing to do with the net connection as such - more with the speed of the particular web-site's server one is downloading from (and how busy it is at the time). Some sites are faster than others. Using some kind of download accelerator software also helps big-time. I forgot to ask the owner why they don't have one installed. Next time.

It happens. Do you have enough RAM in your computer? These days, 512MB or more is the way to go. Another potential bottleneck could be your graphics card. Without spending too much money, 128MB of video memory is "ideal" (at the moment). You should also make sure your hard-drive is a "fast-spinner" (7200rpm or more). There are also performance settings in Windows XP that can be changed to make things better and a whole host of more specialized "tweaks", using third-party software.
If all these things are not "in concert", there will be times when different components can't keep up with each other and a system will freeze, maybe requiring a reboot if various running tasks can't be stopped on-the-fly. Many "default settings" in "Windows Whatever" are, by necessity, highly conservative. A few tucks here and there can make significant improvements to overall efficiency (and speed). Modems in particular.
