Sanurian .. i recall you posted something about telescopes a while back Does Indonesia have a bureau of meterology? I'm chasing historical statistics specifically in Bali and Lombok on rainfall, wind direction, temperature, sunshine totals and the like. Any clues? Dasha

Bali, however, is a tropical island that is remarkably sunny. The island gets sunshine on an average of 67% of the year's daylight hours. This ranges from a high of 85% in September, to a "low" of 45% in January. COLD SEASON: None. Below-freezing temperatures have never been reported in the lowlands, and are rare even on the mountain summits. For the low country, the coldest temperature in the average year will only be in the middle 60's -- quite pleasant, actually! HOT SEASON: Afternoon temperatures in excess of 90F force the body to rely on evaporation to rid it of excess heat. Such hot days can be found any time of year, but are in the majority only from late September through the early part of December. They are most common inland, and are rare on coasts where the winds are off the sea. SEASONAL HUMIDITIES: Afternoon humidities range from the low side of moderate during the dry season to the high side of moderate during the rainy season. Morning humidities are close to or at saturation throughout the year -- especially so during the rainy season. Morning dews and light mists are common. Fogs are most common in the mountains, and very rare along the coasts. WET AND DRY SEASONS: From late November through March, the winds are mostly out of the western half of the compass, and bring the heaviest rains. Typical rains are intense but brief. Several showers may follow one another at intervals during the day, with periods of sunshine in between. The dry season runs from June through early October. Showers at this time of year are usually most common in the afternoons and early evenings. LOCAL CLIMATIC FEATURES: Bali is big enough to have a variety of local climates. Temperatures are mostly a matter of elevation, with the thermometer dropping an average of 3.3/thousand feet of increase in elevation. Inland areas will also get hotter during the day and cooler at night than coastal areas. The coasts are strongly affected by their orientation to whatever winds are blowing at the time. Onshore winds are always considered more pleasant than offshore ones.

Sanurian - has anyone ever told your avator image bares an incredible resemblance to Donald Fagen? I get an image of Steely Dan each time i see it ... almost like Roy's image of Radar Oriely with a hanky on his head receiving instruction from Hawkeye and Trapper!! I wouldn't mind some of the stuff they're on. I've seen Bob recently and he's looking like an old gypsy woman these days. I love the guy whatever he looks like. And as for [i]Steely Dan[/i]: they were a superb group, in my opinion, so thanks for that. :D

Cheers for that Chad. Sorry for the long reply .. been interstate since last thurs. Quite suprising temperatures and rainfall for what I’d thought Indonesia to be. I chose Ampenam as my location being closest to our property. Interesting to see a whole degree difference in mean average between Lombok and Bali. This is great info for temp and rainfall but I was also looking for wind direction details. Any other clues? Tintin – v good ..thank you for the information – can I get the source? I believe there are many Indonesians (including Balinese) living there. Maybe you could find one willing to help you translate stuff. Worth a try. The other thing that occurs to me is finding some of the Indonesian universities with Meteorology departments. You might still have to find an interpreter; then again, you might be lucky enough to find someone who speaks English. Another possibility is the University of Melbourne. When I worked there in the late 60's, it had a large Meteorology department. It's possible they have somebody there who already has English-speaking contacts in Indonesia. Just a thought and again, worth a try. A last possibility is to ask staff at your local Indonesian consulate or even the Embassy/High Commision (?) in Canberra. Good luck. :)
