Greetings,Just popped in here to introduce self. Currently located near Shanghai and moving back to Indo shortly after filling my piggybank in China for 8 years. Wife is Dayak from Kalimantan and I'm British. Married for going on 10 years now. We have decided on Bali to settle but not pinned down a location yet. We do lean toward the north or east though due to the relatively peaceful existence that can be had and the attractive property prices. We're not ruling out anywhere as yet though. Have a couple of questions that were not answered after reading through all the forums here but will post those in the relevant sub-forums. .

Welcome to the forum! I have seen some news reports about what is going on in Shanghai right now and I hope you are ok. Bali will be a welcome change for you.

Highly underrated skill around these parts.

The recommendation - to rent a house (in an area you might prefer) BEFORE you buy - is indeed smart. I made all these mistakes years ago. Today I would even rent the house I want to buy to make sure all (electricity! roof! noisy neighbors! Banjar! hospital, restaurants, supermarkets) is satisfying.North is indeed rather dry and boring. Some hills towards Tabanan with a new Jalan Tol might be very interesting!

Many thanks for the welcome all. @spicyayam Everything you've read is true! Let's just say China wasn't for us when we arrived, certainly isn't at the moment, and will most definitely not be looking to the future. The kind of place people go to, set a number in mind, and once they reach that figure run for the hills. No regrets though as has made Bali doable for us.@JackStraw Yep, the best way to get a less warm welcome would be to ask a seriously dumb question already covered to great length in another thread.@sakumabali Yes, we were thinking more like Kost for a couple of months but renting the actual house we're interested in would be one better. We'll add Tabanan to the list of possibilities. Thanks. Hmm, looking like a trip out east before north then.
