I can't imagine this would be good for tourism.BaliPost.com reports that plans are afoot to triple the Visa-on-Arrival (VOA) cost from the current Rp. 500,000 to Rp. 1.5 million.News of these plans has precipitated vociferous opposition from many tourism leaders in Bali, complaining the visa fee hike plan is inappropriate when tourism is only starting to revive. The chairman of the Bali Tourism Board (Gabungan Industri Pariwisata-GIPI), Ida Bagus Agung Partha Adnyana (Gus Agung), said that his organization and many associated stakeholders highly object to the plan to increase to VOA fee. Gus Agung pointed out that since the reintroduction of the VOA for a restricted number of countries, foreign tourist arrivals to Bali have increased dramatically, now averaging some 2,500 travelers each day.Gus Agung cautioned that plans to increase the VOA fee could boomerang current efforts to rebuild Bali's tourism economy after two devastating years of the global pandemic. Adding: "We (GIPI) and ten stakeholder organizations object to plans to triple the cost of the VOA." The Bali Tourism Board chairman's comments were made during a discussion of "Coming Back to Bali - Collaborative Action for Bali International Traffic Rebound 2022" held in Nusa Dua on Thursday, 14 April 2022. One wonders what is the thought behind such ideas ?Limit the use of them as they are a bit abused, and as the renewal process caused a lot of work for the Immigration Dept ?

Since Bali hasn't brought in much in the way of taxes for the gov in the last 2 years and the general tax base here is negligible AND the gov has paid out a good wadge (technical term) of dosh to support/vaccinate/help lots of the 300 million locals I suspect they're trying to get some of it back in. When you look at the rampant inflation going on in the rest of the world this is the only real price rises I've seen here - so far! (excepting pool chlorine and fish food - both imported)And it aint law yet either.

The self service crew do get screwed here though.Likewise the proposal for the social visa is to charge 6Jt for a straight trhough 180 days rather than the current ~3Jt agent + 1Jt fees + 4 time 1Jt renewal (by agent) = 8Jt. Again no cake for the agents here but self service folks get screwed a bit but save loads of time.So it all depends really on if they bring back the visa waiver for folks that just want the 1 - 2 week holiday. If not then sure, Bali is not looking like an attractive vacation spot. All in all I'd call this a win . . . . unless you are a visa agent.I think this was the proposal but things may of course have changed.https://indonesiaexpat.id/news/new-visa-pricing-announced-more-details-expected-in-april/

In addition to the US$100 or so for VOA it is required with pre-departure RT-PCR travelling to Indonesia. These tests cost up to US$300 in parts of Europe as only rapid/express RT-PCR test clinics near/at airports can get this done within the tight 48 hours as required by Indonesia. These policies will surely help slowing down tourism recovery... On the other hand one minister wanted to focus on "quality" tourists, so this might be part of the plan...https://www.republicworld.com/world-news/rest-of-the-world-news/indonesia-to-focus-on-quality-tourists-wants-to-ban-backpackers-from-bali.html

If it keeps the bogans and cheapsters out then all to the good. I think Bali and tourism in general would benefit from a more high class customer base. I''d much rather see 4 people spending $2500 each than 10 spending $1000.

If they are allowed or encouraged to climb right back onto that bandwagon then we've learned nothing.

Plenty of people like me go there because it's so cheap, last time I rolled in to Bali I had $25,000 AUD (for an estimated 6 months stay that turned in to closer than 18 due to covid) in my account, more than tripled it with crypto and the majority it of it ended up in the Indonesian economy. If they want to 3x the price ok, but then Thailand and Vietnam go on the menu instead. Booking my Indo mrs on a flight to either is pretty simple and meet up there.A lot of things are second rate there and work better in the west let's not forget about that like we seem to so conveniently to justify the cheaper life in Bali. Like what? Roads, Public Transport, food hygiene and medical just to name a few. I'm not anti Bali but it's lacking in a lot of departments charging top $ isn't justified.Watching Damien's youtube ( ) it's pretty clear I'm not that only one thinking that. Open border but Denpasar airport is a ghost town basically. We only went there because it was so cheap, if it gets to western prices I'd much rather go back to USA or Europe to be honest. Guessing that probably isn't the general expat opinion on this forum but that is mine.

If you look at the examples of Fiji and the Seychelles you can see it's possible to have a more expensive form of tourism that protects the environment, culture and people from the storm of mass tourism. The mistake many make is to say Indonesia (Bali), Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, etc (east Asia) are basically all the same and it's only a matter of price which one you choose. I suggest that if your measure is set so low as to include only beaches, beer, food, massages and girls then you've missed the point of Bali anyway so please choose any of those others and don't let the door hit you in the ass as you're leaving. I guess this standard is what motivates many, if not most of the visitors that stay in and around Denpasar but if you're interested in culture, music, unique traditions and some of the friendliest people on the planet then it may be worth the extra visa costs to make it a place without the traffic gridlock, drunken fools (present company excepted), dirt, trash and water problems and exclude the bogans. Now seems like the best time to do just that as Bali has had 2 years of no tourist and they've had to do different things with the people here. Do we want to lose that opportunity and have it all back again? Not this boy.Have a look at Fiji and the Seychelles.
