G'day Folks I'm going to be coming back to Bali in June and need to bring excess gear. How does the system work that says you can import stuff into Bali tax free if you have a new Kitas and how long after the Kitas is issued do you have to bring stuff tax free? My concern is that I will be bringing 2 biggish bags that will definitely exceed the Garuda baggage allowance and I would like to avoid paying the exorbitant excess baggage charges that Garuda levee. I got a quote yesterday for 10kg excess and the price was AU$420. I thought I might contact a shipping company in Perth and get a quote. I would welcome any suggestions that someone might be able to offer.

with in 3 months , try pack and send. Sometime its cheaper to have excess luggage.

I spoke to Pack and Send in Midland and it will cost me just shy of $400 for a 30 kg suitcase full of clothes etc. Just a bit concerned about the customs at the Bali end. I guess it doesn't matter which country it is though there are always issues with customs when importing gear from home.

buy a buisness class ticket and you will get 40kg of checked and 7-10 kg carry on....we bought over 90kg plus on our trip over....if it comes with you there shouldnt be any issue with taxes etc. Plus you get a better seat.
Foamcrest
Juggler is absolutely correct. We fly Garuda business class, get 40k EACH plus carry on. We enjoy fab food and booze, linen tablecloths etc then when we land we go straight to the Garuda business class office give them our luggage tags, off he goes, sources our bags brings out long before the rest of the plane then we tip him $A20.00 and he wheels the bags straight through to our waiting car. Customs ignore us as we seem far too important to trouble. Saves time, bag lugging and hassles with authorities.
harryopal
I assume drug and contraband smugglers also find this a useful service.
Foamcrest
I know nothing about drugs but I am reasonably reliably informed that some passengers with casks of wine and plastic bottles of 'water' have in the past utilise this method?

i had a flight last month the rules say that only 1 bag and around 7kg allowed to bring on the flight cabin , but most of the time whenever im with my relatives we sometimes bring more than 1-2 bags on the cabin flight and its more than 7kg bcus they didnt weight it as long it doesnt look that heavy and the package were not to eye catching i think they will let you pass orrr you can do boarding check and leave some of your luggage at somewhere after you done pick it up again after getting the boarding pass its tricky it is

DO NOT BRING CLOTHES! or anything else you can get here for 1/10 the price you'd pay in Oz. Been here 14 years and own 3 polyester board shorts, 2 swim trunks and several shirts and 2 pairs sandals/thongs. You really, really don't need more and anything you bring will rot or go fungal in the closet. Ditto books/pictures. Load everything you have to GoogleDrive or Dropbox. Have watched in astonishment for years the way people rock up here with all manner of shite they don't need and will never use due to some idiotic idea of "keepsake" just to watch them clutter their houses with it or spend the first 6 months wearing/using it and then never again. What you should bring: 1) Cheese - shed loads2) Medicines (check here first if they have what you need as it will doubtless be much cheaper here)3) Duty free yourself some expensive Scotch/Bourbon - as much as you can!4) If you're a fatass like most of us Expats (comparatively) then bring 3 pairs of boardshorts (recommend thin and nylon)5) Can't think of a damned thing else, except more cheese. 6) If ur an Ozzie then the industrial waste you lot call VegemiteWhat you should NOT bring: 1) Electronics - the climate will kill them within a year. 2) Books - same reason as electronics3) Cloths, shoes - get them all here, unless you're a fatass. 4) Drugs of any kind. If you have serious pre-existing conditions stay where you are. 5) I'm sure there's lots more but can't think of anything really. My existence here is pared down considerable to take account of where and how we live and we live GOOD! and cheap(ish) 6) If you enjoy cooking then maybe some decent pans, but not for the locals to use for you. I originally brought a microwave cause I had extra baggage and the locals destroyed it within a month. If you're gonna have someone cook for you prepare accordingly.

If you're gonna have someone cook for you prepare accordingly.[/QUOTE]Pretty much bang on, going to comment on a few for entertainment, mine and hopefully yours. On the clothes, bring one set of formal clothes agreed you'll be running around in board shorts, t shirts, flip flops the whole time, you'll probably look less presentable than in the west. In this climate I don't see you wearing much else. Of course assuming you're a bloke. 1 set of formal clothes for immigration or meeting your Mrs parents.1) Cheese - shed loads - not much comment on this one, to get fresh food in to Australia is basically impossible so I'm sort of conditioned not to try both ways by default.2) Medicines (check here first if they have what you need as it will doubtless be much cheaper here), - agreed well sort of it. It depends. If you're on some kind of co pay or like in Australia health care card, the meds might be cheaper there, I wouldn't be messing around too much bringing meds you can get here in regardless, I always bring with drs note with dose etc though never been questioned on it.3) Duty free yourself some expensive Scotch/Bourbon - as much as you can! - Totally agree the local scotch and bourbon tastes like glue or petrol (I'm not joking), and a bottle of beam white label will run you $80 USD. As a result? I just drink beer, wine and the odd vodka, forget paying those prices, though sometimes you can find bar or restaurant promos for the brand name mixers that work out as cheap or better than bottle price. Beer and Bali go hand in hand it's easy to get carried away. The limit is only 1 litre to bring in though. 4) If you're a fatass like most of us Expats (comparatively) then bring 3 pairs of boardshorts (recommend thin and nylon). LOL yup5) Can't think of a damned thing else, except more cheese. - pass6) If ur an Ozzie then the industrial waste you lot call Vegemite - some specialty things you can find, but are a lot harder to find, eg deodorant spray is my one, or shaving gel other cream other than Gillette. Of course if you want to go digging through Denpasar or Kuta you can find it most likely, but you pay import on the rarer products.

Markit, i beg to differ on your opinion re clothes. I find better quality, cheaper clothes here in australia at kmart, bigw and target stores. In fact some of their prices astound me. And in fact even shopping in supermarkets here in australia is nearly on a par with bali and usually better quality for most things. For me the 2 big winners in bali are accommodation and eating out, cannot compare to australia.

I guess the situation is a little better now, but I wanted to buy like $500 worth of clothes in winter 2020 and all that was open due to the lockdown was kmart target etc. I only bought the essentials, as I knew I'd be coming back here but damn was cheap.
Markit
You do have to shop around here to find cheaper clothes. I've actually found it cheaper and more convenient to have shirts made (IDR50k) and the next time I need some trousers/shorts I expect I'll do that too.
