Hey there, great forum with alot of knowledge!..I'll be on a 99 year villa lease in the Medewi area soon. Villa purchased and have about 19,000,000 rupiah/month income. I've read the threads here and still not clear if it is enough for a single guy, 60, non-drinker, so haven't made the move just yet. I have visited Bali 7 times now since 2010 and love it. Hope to get to know some of you online and in person.

I would say it is plenty of money to live. Alcohol is expensive, so you save money there. Insurance is expensive also, so if you have that covered you should live comfortably.Unless of course you are no longer single ....:)

It is a bit close really. If you don't have any "cushion" money then the first unconsidered expense or local girlfriend will demolish your budget I'm afraid.

If the villa is already paid for and you don't insist on upper level restaurants or on eating gourmet or mostly imported western foods then one might live quite comfortably on that. My wife and I manage on less (Australian pension - for me only) eat well and still manage to save a little. We did have some "cushion" money for set up - house furniture, a car and advance rental - and also managed to travel over the past three years. .

Here's the deal. If you have some cabe cabean, gold-digging whore who doesn't want to work and is looking for her "bule in shining armor" then yeah, she'll blow through that 19 million rupiah faster than Charlie Sheen can sniff down a ball of Columbia's finest. BUT, and this is a big "but" (hence the capitalization), it's entirely possible to find a good girl in Bali who will not only bring in her own income each month but (gasp) even offer to pay the dinner bill from time to time. I've seen it countless times and even experienced it myself on several occasions. If I wasn't such a shallow piece of shit, I'd settle down with one of this good-hearted woman but that's a discussion for another time. However, these types of girls are rarely in Medewi so if you're settling there, definitely expect to be footing the bill for absolutely everything and say your thanks to God there are not many expensive restaurants or shopping malls in the area. Health insurance will also set you back a bit as many have already said so yeah, unless you find a well educated and well off girl in Medewi, then I suggest you start to develop a passion for eating rice.

You could say I've been vaccinated against contracting the virus known as POP and plan to live a quiet monk-like existence free of those headaches. I do have retirement funds in Australia and USA which I forgot to mention for emergencies only.

Hello Rellek. My wife and I would struggle to live comfortably on that amount, but as you have read, others can. It's really an individual choice and lifestyle thing, as you no doubt know. My only advice is to be aware of inflation. Given the disruption to global supply chains and the weakening Rupiah, I am concerned that Indonesia will experience significant inflation at the consumer level in the coming months and years that will reduce the purchasing power of your 'tight' budget.

Thanks all for the advice and based on your advice I'll keep working stateside for a few years and visit my villa on holidays and rent it out. There is valuable information here in this forum! I'll continue to visit. I'm attaching a photo of the Medewi Retreat staff who are really struggling through the pandemic and have no income. We as ex-pat villa owners all pitched in to help them during these rough times.
