Hi Swampy,Welcome to the forum. Your question has been often asked before, and it really depends upon your particular priorities. What most suggest is to try a place that initially appeals and without committing move around and investigate other areas for a given period of time. You really have to determine what feels right for you.Bali affords a variety of different environments so you should have ample exposure.Good luck.

Markit
Amed is just for divers and them that want it dry, dry and dry (at the mo anyway). Ubud is full, full, full of tourists and middle-aged women looking for love in all the wrong places (Eat,Pay and Leave). IMHO if you want the best of Bali (cool, breezy, oceans, friendly peeps, lowish prices and only 1.5 hours from airport try East Bali.

Swampy,After have spend a few days in Kuta (only good if you like party every day), Ubud (terrible, reminds me of the tourist traps in France) I finally settled down in Sanur. Lovely, quiete, slow paced, suits perfectly for my pensioners life.I would suggest beach side, I mean not going North of the Ngu Rai bypass, Danau Tambligan is the center, Danau Poso is not bad neither.Depends if you are looking for monthly rentals ? The place I stay is very quiete, 7 min walk from Mertasari Beach, but you definitively need a mean of transportation to go around. Personally I used taxis as they are cheap. If you want I give you the name of the place by PMCheers !And BTW, considering you handle, do you come from BKK ?

Sanur unfortunately is going through a building phase any land spare and someone thinks oh Sanur needs another Hotel or a seminak type restaurant bar. There are still a few quiet areas around Sanur.

Im not a party animal and I have been living in legian/seminyak for the last four months and like it a lot. There are many nice places to stay here just as quiet as sanur and the beach on this side is far superior to sanur in my humble opinion. It is not mandatory to go partying every night when you stay in kuta but it is there if you want it. So take your time and have a look around before making any commitment.
