Ok - today I picked up my International Driving Permit, so I can take my turn at braving the Bali traffic traffic next week !
When I picked it up though I was pointed in the direction of this - specific notation for Indonesia............
Indonesia
An IDP is compulsory and must be certified by the Indonesian Motor Association on arrival.

Never heard of the IMA nor do i think you'd have any problems with your Int.License when, and i say when... not if, you get stopped by the police. :)

Another option besides getting an international licence is to go to the policestation in denpasar and pay 200 - 300k Rp and get a 3month valid INDONESIAN drivers licence. About 30 minutes and it's all done... with photo and everything.

I always have my international driving license with me.
1. In Indonesia they like papers with stamps. Even if they don't understand the language. For example; with our visa (sos bud) we had to prove that we were both the parents of our children. Yes. So they needed the birthcertificats of our children, but they were in Dutch which they don't understand but it has stamps and autographs. And that was enough.
2. Than you always have something with you to make yourself known in case off. So you don't need to take your passport with you.
They never checked my license, nor in bali neither in Java. Probably till tomorrow.

Kim,
The 3 month license, is it for car or motorcycle? If it's for car do you know if it's possible to the 3 months for motorcycle? I asking this because i know last spring they had a "3 week recess" at Kantor Samsat in denpasar as the regulations for tourist-licenses were about to change so i'm not sure "what goes" right now.

A Balinese license huh, that's a new one on me. I get my IDL for each and every trip and can more or less count on getting stopped on my travels around the island, especially on the way to Ulu Watu for a surf. I generally carry a photocopy but depending on the officer, at times they do not like that and want to see the original. Having a Balinese one would be interesting and cheaper than the cost of one from AAA in the states. What documentation must one provide to get this? I take it that one goes to the "main" police staion in DPS, which is where? Hoping someone posts some more info on this subject.

Are you talking Drivers license for Car of Motorcycle? You can get a tourist-license for Motorcycle but i'm not sure how it is for Car. You apply for it at Kantor Samsat in Denpasar. It is not a police-station but rather the office that handles registration of motorcylces, cars and issues licenses. The license is restricted to Bali and only valid for one month only if i'm not mistaken. I'm not sure if you can get more than one month now as i haven't been there for quite some time. All i know is that they were anticipating new regulations for the tourist-license last spring. I use IDP for car and tourist-license for motorcycle. never had any problems.
