(Courtesy of the Badung Police/File)A foreign prisoner escaped from Kerobokan Penitentiary, Bali, on Monday. United States citizen and drug suspect Chrishan Beasley, 32, reportedly escaped by jumping the prison wall. Kerobokan prison guard Tonny Nainggolan told The Jakarta Post that Beasley escaped from the prison with another US prisoner, Paul Anthony Hoffman, 57. Hoffman, an inmate serving 20 months' imprisonment for robbery, however was caught soon after he jumped the wall. "They used a ladder that was previously used for a construction project," Tonny said. He further said their escape was spotted by a worker at the women's prison construction site located behind the wall. "The construction worker caught Paul, but Besley managed to escape," Tonny said. Prison officials immediately reported the incident to the Badung Police. "We have coordinated with police and immigration authorities to find him," Tonny said. Earlier this year, four foreign inmates also escaped from the prison. Two inmates have been caught in Timor Leste, namely Sayed Muhammad Said, an Indian citizen, and Bulgarian citizen Dimitar Nikolov Iliev. Australian inmate Shaun Edward Davidson and Malaysian Tee Kok King are still on the run (ebf)

"They used a ladder that was previously used for a construction project" :):p:DUNBELIEVABLE - probably a bakso seller came by & workers left aside everything

I wonder why some of these people on (relatively) short sentences try to escape but those in for life, like the Bali 9 have never tried (or at least it has never been reported)

Maybe it was an act of desperation for Paul. After all, at the end of his sentence, he will be deported, with no chance of seeing his wife and son again, at least for a few years.

I am sure it would have been easy to find Paul even if he did manage to escape. It wasn't really wise of him to try and escape though as well behaved prisoners usually get around 2 months of their sentence reduced for Christmas. Apparently it is very difficult to get let back into Indonesia after being deported for a crime, and next to impossible for drug crimes.

And in addition to more time on his sentence he will now likely be relocated to a more secure, ie remote, prison where his wife and kid will have a much harder time visiting him. Not a very clever guy.
