Chumway, welcome to the forum! I think I can speak for all of us that we hope you enjoy your participation here.
Most all the topics you raise have been in one way or another discussed in full in the past. You might want to check out the extensive archives here, and search your topics of interest as you will find a treasure trove of good information.
The primary topics of concern to you, viz Visas and the property issues have been exhausted on this forum.
So, have a good look around in our "library" and fire away with questions! Again, welcome.

Hello all,
I love this site and finally decided to join. Like many, my past trips to Bali have inspired me to move there. I'd like to go now but will most likely wait until I am 55 in a couple of years. I have read with interest the many posts relating to visa, housing etc.
Visas
During my trips i could see there were many expats living there of all ages. I find it hard to believe though that each month they have to leave and return. Is there any limit to how many times this can be done? Would many of these (younger ones) be on business visas? Are there many advantages in having a retirement visa and in reality how easy it to attain?
Housing
I'd like to buy but it seems fraught with danger. A 25 year seems a waste. what if you want to sell after seven years. Does that mean having to try and sell a 17 year lease? Renting a villa long term is very expensive. Buying freehold through a local seems open to peril along the way. What happens to your estate in circumstances where you may die. It would be hard I think to repatriate the equity back to ones siblings as it is someone elses name. What do most expats do reaging housing? Does a retirement visa allow freehold purchase?
Security
I was last there a few weeks prior to the Jimbaren/Kuta bombings. I believe my favourite place Seminyak was also to be targeted. I guess a greater concern is the risk of kidknappings. What is the security feeling at the moment among expats?
Conclusion
I love Bali and so much want to live. Failing that, anywhere else in South East Asia. I love the climate and the beaches in the region. Does anyone have other suggestions. I know Malaysia has a retirement program "Malaysia my second home". I think Thailand probably has the same visa run problems as Bali. But Bali is my No 1 choice.
Sorry for the ramblings and questions above, but any awnsers would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.
