Some good news from Tabanan

I had to go into the Tabanan tax office today to file my income tax returns. Armed with passport, tax number and a tax department document with a breakdown of what I had paid in 2023 in Jakarta , it was with some trepidation that I entered , expecting all sorts of hoops to jump through. Well, I thought that I had landed on a different planet! The staff there, all young were incredibly helpful, even filling out the forms, enrolling me on the system and even filing the tax returns and were so cheerful with the entire process. Maybe there is hope yet

Well at least Tabanan has something good going on for it. The beachside villages are wasting away at a rate faster than I've seen. I didn't think anything could be worse than Canggu but it seems certain areas of Tabanan are trying to top it. I'm getting out of here soon.

By 'wasting' you mean expanding? Where do you intend becoming a refugee too?

That's news to me! I thought you had to chill your beers on the summit of Gunung Agung every night and the Ibu Ibus would carry them down in baskets, insulated with coconut rinds so by the time they reach your estate, they are still drinkable.

Tabanan declared a couple years back they would convert 3,100 Ha of "non-productive" rice fields into tourist zones (from Nyanyi to Soka). Great luck that the "non-productive" rice fields all happen to be located along the beach. This shameless conversion of rice fields is happening at a high rate. Overnight land can be valued 100-200 times the value of rice fields. That sounds worse than it is - around my way the rice fields are between 18 and 25 juta/are and building land between 170 and 250/are so pretty normal usage increase. Fact is also that rice fields bordering the ocean are marginal at best, what with salt, wind and blowing sand so the acreage might be better used for housing/hotels. Bali is gonna be popular forever or until it's completely paved over and, who knows, even then people will come. Friends from my youth are visiting Bali for the first time and simply refuse to believe I know best about avoiding Cangu and/or Gilli T. People come because they're convinced by the media there's something special here. They're right too, just not where they are all headed, against all good advise. Go figure?
