For anyone that has previously lived in the Ubud area, and returned recently it's bit hard to have much compassion for the locals. Ubud was shut down for taxis other than locals going back to at least prior to this Century, but most were not unreasonable to deal with. While there a couple weeks ago a local insisted upon 100,000.rp for going a few blocks. In addition prices at long standing restaurants have increased beyond belief. In comparison to places in Seminyak, Kuta and Canggu, Ubud has become a total tourist trap. Contest this post if you will, but my retort will ask how long you have dwelt there?

Where is the local government controlling this? The peoples greed and love for money has brought out the evilness in them. This will catch up with them someday!

The local government is in on it. Developers do not need permits here, just a big slush fund. Whatever surfaces later can be sorted out by the "protectors".

Just a guess, as I haven't been there recently, but can a person still walk the beach in Sanur. That huge project hopefully will leave as a path other hotels have done in the past.

There's many a slip between cup and lip, as the saying goes. The instigators of this project are still in the land acquisition stage so I suspect the video is more aspirational than informational. Watch this space.

In my view, having Russians in Bali is positive. Typically, they are tall, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Wouldn't it be nice to see these unsung models strolling around Bali in bikinis and thongs? Also generally speaking they are intelligent with world class talents. Just look at the Russian people immigrating to the US, UK. A few of them become the richest people on earth, a white hat hackers. Many of well known figures in sport, modelling. :cool::cool:

I'm in 2 minds about this rash of (Russian) development here on the island and here's why: years ago when I used to (80s!) frequent Thailand everyone was gasping about the commercialization of the various beaches (Karan, Kata, etc). In the mean time everything there is high-rises and condos. At the time I said I didn't give a damn because the natural beach lovers could just move on up or down the coast to the next untouched island or beach. And that is exactly what has happened - untouched beaches can still be found. If they fill up Bali with the same stuff as Thailand there are still 16,999 more islands here for you nature lovers to foff to. I've been to a lot of them and they're great - Bali like is used to be. Shit changes guys. Oh and while we're on about villa developments on Bali and those from Parq more precisely this is what they intend putting up 5 minutes down the beach from me. LOL so much for the 100m setback from the high water mark on the beach, let alone the beach itself being Government owned land and not available to development . . . . mind just how long would those pools last when build on the beach sand :).

There are too many child and old people killers of the rusky variety, polluting my air and vision on this island . Like the rubbish on the beaches .

Spot on mate. This is exactly what I tell everyone too. I was talking to my mate the other day about this and he was bitching about how developed Bali has become. Do you think people bitch about how developed Sydney is or New York? It was beautiful, pristine wilderness before people colonized and industrialized it. Nothing pisses me off more than westerners coming over here and telling locals how they should or shouldn't develop their land. Change is inevitable. You can't stop it. So if you don't like it, either shut up or like Markit said, go find another undeveloped island to be your paradise. But odds are you won't like it there because they won't have good wifi or Acai bowls and the corruption will even be worse than it is in Bali.

I go incandescent when people complain about how Bali is fecked and have only managed to get as far north as Sanur and couldn't find Ubud, Lovina or Candi Dasa on a map.
