Can anyone remember the documentary about the English couple with small kids that moved to Bali and the guy just found a piece of what he considered unused jungle and decided to build a house there without buying it or anything? The producers followed him through what was progressively dire events that looked to be ending with them starving to death except for the generosity of the bemused locals. (shades of Mosquito Coast - Paul Theroux) This seems pretty similar.
