Speaking the language helps on the technical part, daily life things. But when the cultures and customs are soooooo far apart, you still don't "communicate". Hell, I never managed to "communicate" with the average Aussie here.... OK, I admit I am not in beer drinking and loud sport on TV, so simply that limits the "cultural communication" ... BTW, I don't speak the local language, so at least I don't understand all the B.S.

Good point Markit! I am guilty of not posting a thread in a long time. I didn't like all the negative feedback. There were some positive ones though. I did get my Kitas and will keep it alive for awhile I hope. Markit you are right about the new comers just staying in Canggu, Uluwatu, and the Gili's there are a few though that will get out and see more of the real Bali. This is not an easy place once you have lived here a long time and you see the way it really is for the locals and for the tourists. Ya when your new it seems so sweet and that the people really like you. But that fades away like morning dew. I can only hope as an old hippie that love is more valuable than greed and money. I hope that not just a John Lennon dream.

I'm not sure what it is you expect the locals to do when they meet you? Do you speak fluent Indonesian? They damned sure can't do English. So how do you expect a deep and meaningful relationship with people you can't communicate with? I sure don't. Lived here 15 years and everyone in the village knows me and smiles at me and will exchange a few words. I am sure they'd speak more if I or they were able but hey! I don't even talk to some people I share a language with in - bunch of assholes out there. That's the saving grace of not speaking to the locals, you can assume they're all as nice as they pretend to be. Enjoy being surrounded by smiling, happy people you don't know, I do.

Sometimes I wonder why 90% of expats in Bali even live here when all they do is bitch and moan about local culture and other expats. Sure, not everyone is kind and generous. Sure, there are lots of assholes here. But name one place in the world that isn't like that. I feel some people come to Bali expecting everyone to roll out the red carpet for them and welcome them to a utopian paradise. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. The grass is green where you water it. Put in the effort and you can have a great life here, just as you would in most other places where you put in the effort.

The expat position in Bali is reminiscent of postwar British migration to Australia. Australia then was a very unsophisticated and often hostile place for foreigners. The term 'Whinging Pom" was frequently used in response to complaints followed by "why don't you go back where you came from?" Actually I see that the lovely Australian senator, Pauline Hanson has responded to another senator, Mehreen Faruqi's critcism of the Royal family by telling her to "pack your bags and piss off back to Pakistan." A few years ago Hanson declared she was leaving Australia to live in London as she was fed up with all the migrants. I guess someone pointed out that London probably has more migrants per head of population than in Australia so she didn't go. Perhaps she could come and live in Bali and improve the image of Aussies with helpful suggestions about what is wrong with Indonesians.
