I cannot believe they are going to put a law through banning sex outside marriage and making it a criminal offence subject to a year in jail. Did they not learn from the last time they tried it. Tourism will be killed. Also how they would enforce it I do not know.

It is for real this time. Expected to passed as law 15 December. As the new law is applicable foreigners, Bali need to add the following to their tourist marketing material and campaigns: "Sex outside marriage can lead to up to a year in prison, while unmarried couples are banned from living together." But how can it be enforced. If its anything like the adultery laws as practiced in Ache it will have to be witnessed. Practically it is unlikely to happen. However, I suppose folks staying in a hotel etc could be asked to show their documentation.

In addition to people in love there is a huge sex industry in Indonesia and not just for tourists. The money involved is immense. Police will be bribed to look away. It will just add to endemic corruption and will solve nothing.

Well its been taken into law today although it will not be enforced for 3 years. Since I first came here in 1983 it has become more and more Islamised. Here in Makassar you cannot even buy a beer from shops and supermarkets. I am just glad the people are still as nice as ever.

It's a shame to see this happening. Weren't there huge protests against this a year or two ago?

Basically every tourist who comes to Bali and meet an Indonesian girl is with one foot in the jail. Suddenly the "father" appears and tells him he will be in jail for a year. Of course if he makes good the damage he won't....just must pay a fortune! ridiculous

Nobody wants to go to jail for a shag. If the foreigner wouldn't be convicted there's no problem for her either. Daughter can score on a regular basis and not just once. Plus it's her / "father's" money ;)

Funny you mention the police. In this new law it will also be a crime insulting "state symbols". Badmouthing the police can be punished by 1,5year prison time. You are right though; few will see inside of a jail cell, but maybe a bit lighter wallet.

Well it is restricted for close family to report this. But I quite sure many hotels will start asking couples for marriage certificates during check-in as this is already done for some hotel groups in Indonesia. This as the hotels will avoid the risk of "bad press" if couples are arrested at their hotel. In Java the ME tourists have for years contract "married" local girls for the duration of their holiday. As it is restricted for close family to report this it may have limited reach. As usual a few will be arrested to set an "example". But the main concern is the fact that this new law will be huge for those that are into blackmail business. This will surely also result in violence and murders.

True. Some bad new for "animal lovers" though as according to Article 341 it is now a crime having "sexual relationship" with animals.

I think a lot of guys (?) on here tend to panic a bit fast, and overdramatazing the media frenzie. First of all, locals are much more at risk than foreigners in this story. Secondly, before this being enforced in Bali I'll probably be "expired". And for those who have decided to live in a "lovely remote jungle village", well it's your choice. BTW, Missus and me living together since 5 years and nobody in the remote Banyuwangi jungle village has ever made a comment during our (very) short stays there. I worry much more about the "new visa scheme"

lol Markit, might come visit you in your new quarters in hotel K,a few years down the road, and alas there will be no file baked into the cake. Living ones life potentially committing criminal offences on a habitual basis and relying on the good will of others not to report your "crimes" - well, good luck with that. Suspect you might have missed the point here though, when you think people believe they'll be locking every one in irons 1000 days hece. ... incentives drive human behavior!

Funny you mention "Chicken Littles are running around". This is now a criminal offence. Article 278 of the new KUHP law stipulates that letting their poultry or livestock enter inside a garden or land that has been sown with seeds or plants belonging to someone else -- can be punished with a maximum fine of Rp. 10 million or 6 months in prison.
