Thanks Spicyayam, Well I’ve got something right! I’ve been looking at Homestays in Ubud hoping the owners might be able to give me some suggestions. I’ll check out the website. Thanks. Lizzie Don’t know if you’re in Ubud but any suggestions for a central Homestay cost not really an issue just comfortable with aircon.

In Ubud, an AC is nice, but not necessary, especially if you have spent a couple of years in India. However, what you certainly will need in Dec and Jan, is a sturdy umbrella!

Coming from Western Australia the idea of rain in December and January is very exciting for me. I’ll certainly remember to bring the brolly!

I don't know Ubud well, but I like the area around Goutama Street. Lots of small homestays and budget restaurants.

I'd suggest you read all the reviews, book one in Monkey Forest Road or Jl Hanoman (most central locations) for a few nights and then have a look around at other places when you get there. Some places on Jl Raya Ubud may be a bit noisy. I can't recommend any at the moment because I haven't stayed in Ubud for 7 or 8 years.

There have been some devious posts with reviews of different establishments but in general it is worth looking at reviews on places like Trip Advisor after seeing a place that looks okay on a web site. Over the years I have been attracted to a variety of hotels in different places where the web information and pictures seem great and then found reviews saying things like.... cockroaches everywhere.... staff hassling for tips... Noisy... dirty. ... Do not stay at this place.... " etc. Matselah's advice is sound so you don't get committed to a place that you wished you had not booked.

You could also consider Nyuh Kuning, a small village on the other side of Monkey Forest. Very quite, with several nice places to eat.

SamD, I don't disagree but where you may have a majority of reviews making negative comments it would suggest that perhaps one ought regard the place with some scepticism.

Thanks for all the advice. I tend to look at what countries reviewers come from. Coming from Australia we are used to creepy crawlies but a lot of Europeans find them very off putting. So, if someone from Holland complains about ants or mosquitos I can understand how it may feel for them but that wouldn't worry me. Well Ive booked what seems a great place so fingers crossed. Now, to investigate the possibilities of doing some volunteer work when I come back early next year. Any advice would be welcome.

I have always taken online reviews with a pinch of salt. Everyone's priorities and likes/dislikes are different and you can only judge a place based on your own reaction. I have stayed at places where I have been very happy but when I read other people's reviews they have a completely different perception.

HI! Someone earlier in this conversation suggested I contact the Ubud Rotary Club re doing some volunteer work but no can't see that link. Can some one help me with a name or contact email. Hi there, I will be in Ubud next Sunday and I would like to do a couple of cooking classes while I'm there. There seems to be as lot to choose from and wondered if anyone can help me with some info about which ones are good. I don't want anything too basic and maybe an evening class as I'm in Bali only on my own and often find the nights a bit quiet. I am in Ubud for two weeks and have just had a friend, who was to join me for the second week, cancel so any other tips about out of the way things to do and see would be great. I'm still hoping to do some volunteering while I'm in Ubud and have my fingers crossed about that happening. Cheers, Lizzie
