I saw this product is available in N, America and simply plugs into a power socket.....but they work off 120VAC. I have a fiber WiFi modem in an upstairs bedroom but the signal is a bit weak in a guest bedroom downstairs. Can anyone explain how they work and where available to buy in Bali and......do they really work?

Thanks for the link G...the modem is less than a year old and came when the Company installed the fiber-optic cable which includes connecting to the TV...so that would be difficult to move.I like the idea of a repeater that just plugs into power and becomes a receiver and boosted transmitter. I wasn't sure if they would work with all models of routers but appears they do...I'll shop this week for a 240VAC type.

. . . becomes a receiver and boosted transmitter . . .
Post #3.This is ringing a distant bell now and I have first-hand experience in solving this type of problem. Some years ago I found my PC wasn't getting enough signal from the modem, which impeded the progress noticeably. A friend showed me a device he got via eBay - it plugged into a USB port and your wifi connection uses it automatically. For example, I was at the Holiday Resort Lombok one time, in the Beach Bungalow on the southern corner in the end-most one. The check-in staff had warned me I might not get a signal there. I could connect but it was not good enough. I then put this booster in, re-booted and things were much better. No mains to plug into - they work straight off the USB.Go to eBay.com and search on 'wifi booster USB 802'For less than $20 your problem should be solved. And, the number 802 is important with these devices. And one with longer aerials also helps.Best to find a PC enthusiast group and cross-check all the advice you get from here.Best luck with it.

I would suggest a powerline extender. There are different types and brands. One that gets very good reviews is the TPLink 4220 kit. You should be able to find one in RTR (formerly "Rimo") on Jl Diponegoro, Denpasar (before Ramayana on the opposite side of the road).Bhinneka.com (Jakarta) has them for Rp 718,000 with free shipping. Delivery is usually within 2-3 days.Jual Powerline Adapter TP-LINK AV500 Wi-Fi Powerline Extender Starter Kit [TL-WPA4220KIT] - Harga TP-LINK TermurahHave a look at the following review:https://www.avforums.com/review/tp-link-wpa4220kit-powerline-extender-starter-kit-review.562Hope this helps.

Did some research on the device that YPDN recommended,60% of reviewers gave it a 5 star rating, amazon has it for $28,at that price its definitely worth a try, most important is that you don't have to worry about 120/240 because it plugs into your laptop,

I searched on '5dbi 300Mbps USB WiFi Wireless Adapter Dongle 802.11 bgn High Power Antenna' on eBay.comIt is what I bought in October 2012. $12.95AUD with free postage from Shenzhen.I ended up with 2 of them. One stayed at home on an old XP desktop and the other travelled with me.Get the long aerials. They can sample the airwaves more than a short aerial, IMHO. I'm thinking something permanent, in another area of my house, to extend and amplify the signal received from the Router (D-link DIR600 M) so guests can receive the signal for their smartphones/laptops and tablets without connecting to anything.I've seen this on Bhinneka...and seems what I'm looking for...any comments from those technically skilled to review?....Jual Range Extender D-LINK Wireless Range Extender N300 [DAP-1320/EEU] - Harga D-LINK TermurahIt doesn't identify the power source but, as its sold in Indonesia, can I assume it will work from our 220VAC grid supply

No, not at all, davita. I re-checked that link to avforums and the copy of it that you posted in your comment. Both work fine for me. I can only think that you've got something on your computer that's re-directing legitimate links to somewhere else ("browser hijacking" perhaps). I would recommend that you scan your system for malware and a potential virus. That D-Link range extender for Rp 349,000 might sound like a bargain but I've seen many user reviews from people who think it's crap. (I checked out of curiosity.) Personally, I'd go for a good powerline extender. The TP-Link has a range of 300m. It can be ganged to go even further.Good luck.

hahaha OK Johnny you weren't working me over but I get the link to AVforum you provided and the first page has a review by a Greg Hook in 2013 then 'specs' then 'user review (1)' and when I click it says...."Don't buy this junk!Review of TP-Link TL-WPA4220KIT Home Distribution Product by TPLINK SUCK, Feb 17, 2016."What's the purpose of the 2 pieces to this kit...seems one piece is an extender and the other is an adaptor....why would I need an adaptor?

...seems one piece is an extender and the other is an adaptor....why would I need an adaptor?...
One adaptor connects to your modem/router and then sends signals through your house wiring to the other one which is a wifi extender for the rest of the area.A good dual-band wifi extender, capable of transmitting on different channels, might be all you need. If the extender's only single band, all your wifi devices will compete with each other. That can be a performance slug overall. Still, they've improved a lot over the years. Unfortunately, many of the best devices aren't readily available in Indonesia.Review of TP-Link TL-WPA4220KIT Home Distribution Product by TPLINK SUCK, Feb 17, 2016
Yeah - I saw that too. Maybe that "reviewer" is a TP-Link hater. Certainly bagging TP-Link products without details of why. Like a lone-wolf attack.

Thanks for the info Johnny...I think your 'using the house wiring' might be a step too far for my needs.I agree that review did look like coming from a psycho..I might just buy one of those cheap D-link or TP-link from Bhinnako and hope it works. I just want guests to access the internet from the bedroom instead of needing to go to the living room..In addition, my wife wants a bluetooth headphone to use why she's in the gym...any recommendations from Bhinnako under Rp500,000...I'd be as well have both products delivered at the same time

There is a useful article on powerline extenders at Home networking explained, part 7: Power line connections - CNET. I use them to get wired connections to my two Internet enabled TVs so that I can watch content such as YouTube in hi-def on a big screen. I have prolink and TP-link and they inter-operate quite well. Some of the available devices also operate as wifi hotspots thus extending wifi coverage in your home - I am not doing that yet, but maybe soon. They are available for bhinneka, Lazada and Tokopedia. I guess they are also at RTC but have not checked.

This is the bad-boy: http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/TL-WA850RE.htmlIt picks up the wifi signal from my NEW INDIHOME FIBER OPTIC BROADBAND (can't say that often enough) from 10 meters away and makes it accessible up to another 20 meter away from that. Cost about 340k at RIMO and is so stupid simple to install even Davita should manage it. Oh, goes through 2 walls, alang alang and some windows too.

I should be able to install that as it only needs to be plugged-in.....but I'll be sure to check the socket is live by sticking my wet fingers in first. Negative!...what's the point of employing a handyman...I'll get him to switch the power ON while I check with my fingers...:icon_e_geek:I've always wanted curly hair.

I had connectivity issues as well. I was first looking at buying a Wi-Fi extender but then noticed that these are about the same price as a regular router. So I just bought a second router (needs cable though). In my opinion a router will give a better signal then the Wi-Fi extender will do.Next step for me is try to figure out how to set the second router parallel to the first router so I can use one network login instead of the two networks I currently use.
davita
Thanks Balibule."(needs cable though)' therein lies my problem. My router is upstairs and the area in the shadow is downstairs at a further end to the house. The CBN Co. did suggest a 2nd router but they wanted N Rp to install.I'm thinking a +/- Rp350,000 extender that Markit advised might just be what I need...worth it if it works...so will report back.
ronb
A review of the wifi extender is at [urlhttp://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2455322,00.asp. If you place the extender in a spot where the primary wifi signal is weak you will get reduced speed for connections via the extender. So there is a balancing act between how far to extend and speed. The powerline adapter can extend further at higher speed. And balibule's approach of using a physical cable maintains speed also.

Is it possible to drill some holes through the walls?
I don't want to go to that extreme as the guest bedroom is rarely used anyway. I just wanted it so, when we do have guests, they can read their email in bed.According to ronb's link...thanks...it appears from there the D-link I saw on Bhinneka is better than Markit's TP-link....I'll see if Rimo has both.Maybe someone can help with this 'pairing' as I have the D-link DIR 600M (D-Link | Products | Wireless Router | Wireless Router | DIR-600M) and it doesn't have this WPS button for auto-transfer of data....it has reset but not sure what that does.
