You're not having a good run there, are you?
Sorry, can't answer your questions Gerry, but nice to see you back on the forum. All the best for 2006.
as last week Vera discovered she has Typhoid
ouch. Typhoid fever is nasty. I had it 2 years ago and felt like i got run over by a truck. If not treated it can be leathal. In my case i waited too long for a diagnosis so as it had gotten really bad i had to get a doctor on house-call. I didn't have the strength to get out of bed or eat. The antibiotics-cure worked amazingly fast though afterwards. S'moga cepat sembuh.
Seems strange to me that Vera would have to pay more tax than myself.
The “justification” for that when it was initiated was purely economic...keep Indonesian money in Indonesia. Indo is under some pressure by ASEAN to bring that more into line with what other ASEAN member countries charge their citizens as export tax. We'll see.
Sounds like you have your travel plans, so that's a good step.
Gerry
Well - it must be nearly a year since my last visit to the forum! so I have a lot of catching up to do.
I shall be coming over to Bali again in February :D
Last February Vera had just had Appendicitis so we couldnt do too much, this time round I hope we can get out a little more, I say hope - as last week Vera discovered she has Typhoid! :(
Is it me do you think? every time I plan to see Vera something crops up!
I have a quick question, I could ask Vera but its something of a surprise for her so I can't !
I plan to take her to Singapore for 4-5 days on my way home again from Bali, by getting the ferry from Batam to Singapore.
Not being too aquainted with air travel, I understand that if Vera flys with me from Denpasar to Singapore she (me!) would have to pay the 100,000(?) to leave. but if Vera gets a domestic flight Denpasar to Batam - then the ferry, then it is much less.
Am I allowed a domestic flight? might be a silly question but I honestly dont know! or do I have to travel as an international flight?
Also - When I arrive in Bali - I assume without proof of onward travel I might have difficulty getting in?
I could book a return from Singapore to Denpasar then when I get there cancel my return segment I suppose!
How would I go about booking a flight from Denpasar to Batam ? is it possible to do it online from the UK? if so who should I try? or should I relent and tell Vera the plan as I expect Vera would get better rates than I would?
So much for my quick question!
Hope you are all well :)
Roy
Hi Gerry. Nice to hear from you again. As I recall Vera is Indonesian, and thus would be traveling under her Indonesian passport?
If that is the case, then her departure tax from Indonesia on an international flight would be Rp 1 million, not 100,000. A hundred thousand rups would be your departure tax.
If she travels to Singapore by ferry from Bintang or Batam, the departure tax is Rp 500,000 unless her Indo passport was issued from that area of Sumatra, in which case she would not pay any departure tax. I only know this as my wife used to work at the Banyan Tree Resort in Bintang, and her passport at that time was issued from there, thus she never had to pay departure tax to go over to Singapore for the day, or a few days.
Are you coming in on a VOA basis, or are you securing a social or business visa before arrival? If you are arriving on a VOA basis, then yes, your ticket should have a return ticket as well. That return portion could however be from Singapore, and if asked, you could explain that you will be taking the ferry from Bantam over to Singapore.
I hope this info helps and that you are able to see Vera soon. Kind regards and Happy New Year!
Gerry
Hi all - thanks for the replies :)
Roy - ah 1 million Rp, so many noughts to get to grips with again !
Yes - Vera is Indonesian, I think she is registered in Jakarta not Bali and all the paperwork passport etc are from there. Seems strange to me that Vera would have to pay more tax than myself.
I've gone ahead and booked 2 flights from here arriving on a VoA basis, Quantas from UK to Singapore return, and Singapore to Bali return - using my accrued miles on Singapore Air.
So I shall cancel my return journey on SingAir once I get into Bali without losing any money from it. Would be devavstating to get to Denpasar and find they dont let me in !!
It should hopefully work out well as Vera is away on a field trip and flies back in on the same day as I arrive - and if all the flight times go to plan we get in to Bali 10 minutes apart so will meet up at the airport :)
Tommy - Typhoid does not sound nice, Vera was very run down for a few days before I made her go to a doctor for a blood test, the results came back - but when she went to get the result there was no doctor there - just given a piece of paper with medical jargon on it and blood count figures etc, nothing in any language she knew saying what she actually had !!
We have a doctor friend in the USA so Vera sent the figures over to him for a translation to find she had Typhoid ! she is suffering a bit today I think - just had a message saying her temp is still 37 degrees a week after starting antibiotics, I think she may be too used to whichever one she was given so its not working.
We shall see !
Happy New Year to you all
A very happy New Year to all of you, from cold Amsterdam, where I will be staying for a while.
What I like about the forum is meeting people IRL. (It should be compulsory) Once you meet people, the perspective changes on what is said and done on the net. I hope to meet some of you (again) in Bali some day.
May all your New Year Wishes come true,
The above is very true. You can have preconcieved ideas about someone then you meet them and everything changes. That is the only thing I do not like about the internet and smsing. No emotion behind the words. The smiley faces may be cute and convey some emotions but nothing like meeting someone face to face.
Happy New Year.

A very happy New Year to all of you, from cold Amsterdam, where I will be staying for a while.
On this page you can find a panorama of the New Year in Amsterdam by me:

I don't know about you, but 2007 has been quite a year. One of my "high lights" was certainly the day that I first read Mark Austin's tabloid style lies about me being a pedophile etc. It makes me wonder if this so called "freedom" on the internet is such a good thing. Every nutcase who learns a bit of the internet can, if he or she wants, turn into a menace which is difficult to fight. Sure, I also was tempted to revert to such "tactics", but now you will not find me anymore in the front rows of defending "anonymous freedom of speech".
2007 ended dramatically for the forum. People arguing, leaving etc. Of course the forum will recover, it has happened before. I think the forum misses a "motor". (A group of) People who are motivated to post their experience from time to time, and say a few friendly words, etc. I don't find the time to be a "motor", unfortunately. I miss Allan, and Mats. I hoped really that a forum without moderators would increase posting, but releaving the mods was stupid. Excuses to Allan and Mats, and also to you.
In the not to far future the forum will move to its own domain. It will also be upgraded to new forum software.

Happy new year Bert and to everyone on the forum. I hope to see some of you when I go to Bali in April.

The highlight for 2007 for me was waking Bert up at 11.00am on another stinking hot Lovina day and drinking all his beer.
Cheers to 2008 Brother

Lets hope the new year brings a new beginning for us all. I wish each and every one of you that your hopes and dreams come true.

Indeed, happy new year all.

Hi Bert,
How long wil you stay in NL. Maybe we could get together for lunch or diner while you are here?
Markit
According to Dasha above, Bert does a pretty mean breakfast. :D
Happy New Year to all. Here in the UK it couldn't really be any worse - cold, wet, dark (gets light for about 15 minutes a day) and the economy is also going down the tubes.
Enjoy wherever you are - it's only temporary.
