And how many of these 5 million deaths were due to ONLY covid? That's the real number I'd like to know about. The vast majority of covid deaths are related to people with other underlying medical conditions. These same people would have died from the regular flu as well I'm sure.
Or simply from old age.
Let's have a look at the TOTAL yearly deaths in France, numbers provided by INSEE (equivalent of British ONS). This is the number of deaths declared daily by civil authorities, city halls, hospitals, etc.... cause of death is irrelevant, and includes natural death.
At the 8th of November :
2019 : 519.985 (2019 = before Covid, hence a "normal" year)
2020 : 556.681 => excess death vs 2019 = 36.696 = 7% excess death
2021 : 554.488 => excess death vs 2019 = 34.503 = 6,6% excess death
Of course 6 / 7% excess death is not negligible, but is not as dramatic as some would like us to believe. It is certainly not the end of the world, and one may ask the question if it justifies destroying whole economies, having many people lose their job, locking up the population etc .....
And if you dig deeper, you will notice that the majority is in the 65+ range, even more in the 75+, and many with comorbidities. So, if we count in matter of "loss of life expectancy" it gives a completely different view.
Because, yes, old people are closer to the exit than to the entrance. It's life. I am 68, so I know it.
Have a good day, fellow pensioners !
