Wasn't this threatened sometime late last year? Either they're finally putting it into practice or else the Bkk embassy never received the memo that the threatened policy was withdrawn...

That has always been the case here in the Us,and now they also require a copy of your bank statements plus the letter from your sponsor, that is something they only introduced last year,

Each foreign Indo Embassy seems like it's own McDonald's franchise with the power to make Big Macs any old way they feel like. I will never understand why there's such a difference with agents in Singapore and nothing similar anywhere else...

Money! They have streamlined their system for maximum personal gain and to many foreigners benefit. They are definately more commerical than Bangkok.

Has anyone been to the RI Embassy Singapore...I've only ever used an agent there and every other RI Embassy/Consul I've attended personally.Maybe that's why there's a difference in service.

Are there any other countries in Asia besides Thailand and Indonesia that allow foreigners to have effectively uninterrupted permanent residence through repeatedly renewed social or tourist visit visas? Could never happen in the EU, North America or other more developed countries in Asia. I don't think it would be a shock if Thailand and/or Indonesia decide that they want to follow the rest of the developed world on this issue...

Malaysia has had, for many years, a very progressive MM2H program for foreigners wishing to reside there. Last time I checked there were over 15,000 registered MM2H visa holders. I've spoken to everyone I've met, who have contacts with authority in RI, and suggested that a similar system would enhance the Indonesian economy and global recognition. Unfortunately, IMO....Indonesian xenophobia over their past colonialisation, and national pride, seems to dwarf the obvious in all their thinking. Also, some in leadership are afraid their tenuous positions might be undermined by clever foreigners. That's why we are kept on a tight leash and, if we stretch and find ways to circumvent their rules, they reign us in.

Last year I needed to renew my sosbud visa (5 months ago) and I wasn't asked for my financial status. My sponsor was the language school that I still attend and their bona fides were required. I try to follow the rules of this country that I am living in because I would prefer to not have to look over my shoulder all the time because I have been dancing too close to the wind.I am currently awaiting an approval of my application for a retirement visa which includes a multiple entry/exit permit but disallows me from working in Indonesia.Clear and simple. I'm cool with that.As crossways says, "seize the day".
