Oh no am I becoming my father.Restos yes but wife hates shopping in Indonesia thinks its cheap and crap (unlike me I like cheap and crap) She is like the majority of Indonesians who love anything American and European as long as it has a label and is expensiveHave you never noticed that??As for my smartarsed spotted youth son he will be at school so I wont bring him .So would still love suggestions

I spent a wonderful time in Batu, East Java last year...and it's on my list to return. It is not far from Malang (fly direct from Bali) or, if adventurous, take a train from Banyuwangi (I've done both). They have many theme parks there...I only had time to visit the e-Green park and that took all day. It was full of exotic birds from all over the world but the theme is 'green' and 'culture'. Around the Malang region there are many agriculture places to visit (tea plantations and apple orchards) but, for my money, I'd concentrate on Batu.I stayed in Lawang with relatives but suggest staying in Batu itself to be able to explore....there are many tourist hotels.Check out Tripadviser.

If you don't mind a bit of travel, how about North Sumatra? It's where Leonardo DiCaprio just was. You can see the orangutans in Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba is a great place to chill for a few days, or maybe you will like it so much you will skip Bali all together :) You need to fly into Medan. There is some good shopping malls there for your wife.

Further to my post #4 recommending a trip to Batu...don't plan to fly to Malang anytime soon...Mount Bromo just erupted again and closed that airport.According to Darwin's volcano reporting the ash is spreading to the west and doesn't look like affecting Bali....not yet!

Hi Geedee,I had one of the best time of my life at Waeni's Sunset View Bungalows at Bulamben. You will find a very good level of civilization there and a breathtaking view on the ocean to the East and the volcano Agung to the West. Food is good, people are always smiling and this is very quiet but there's still a lot of tourists so if you want to meet people it's great too. If you feel adventurous you can try scuba diving or snorkeling one of the best place in Bali to do that.

Other interesting destinations include:* Kupang in Timor with a strong Christian influence and loud music in their public transport* the small island of Rote off the south of Timor has a destination for surfers (Nembrala)* Flores - take a week or so for a road journey from the east en to the west - a Portuguese Catholic background* Sumba - horses, cattle, dogs and sometimes the feel of outback AustraliaDifferent locations in Indonesia are so different - so keep moving.
